14 Ways To Send Someone With Anxiety Support

Anxiety is a disorder that receives much attention but little understanding. It has become more and more popular to talk about, but not enough people know what it truly entails.

A few months ago my boyfriend sent me the following poem. It instantly brought tears to my eyes because it was the epitome of how it feels to suffer from anxiety. He knew.

Too Much

Do you remember the first time you were called annoying?

How your breath stopped short in your chest, the way the light drained from your eyes, though you knew your cheeks were ablaze.

The way your throat tightened as you tried to form an argument that got lost on your tongue?

Your eyes never left the floor that day.

You were 13.

You're 20 now and I still see the light fade from your eyes when you talk about your interests for "too long".

Apologies littering every other sentence, words trailing off a cliff you haven't jumped from in 7 years.

I could listen to you forever, though I know speaking for more than 3 uninterrupted minutes makes you anxious.

All I want you to know is that you deserve to be heard... for 3 minutes, for 10 minutes, for 3 hours, forever.

There will be people who cannot handle your grace, your beauty, your wisdom, your heart; mostly because they can't handle their own, but you will never be and have never been...

"too much".

- Tyler Ford

I am always feeling like I am "too much" or "not enough". Always feeling inadequate and overthinking every little thing. The smallest occurrences can feel like the end of the world; like the time I splattered olive oil on my shirt while cooking and I fell apart. There's nothing like being picked up off the kitchen floor and consoled over something so minuscule. Our anxiety can show in negative ways sometimes through our actions or behavior. We don't do it on purpose, we don't do it for the hell of it, I promise you that. Our anxiety makes us feel out of control.

Some people just don't understand because they have never experienced it in full force. When an episode occurs or a panic attack takes over, it is hard to explain what exactly you need from your loved ones. It can feel like the world is caving in.

For a friend or family member that suffers from anxiety, this may be the exact thing they need to hear from you, whether they're having a rough day or an anxiety filled week:

- "Breath. Deep breathe in, deep breath out."

- "You're stronger than your anxiety."

- "You are and always have been enough."

- "I love you, anxiety and all."

- "You're safe."

- "You can and will get through this."

- "I believe in you."

- "Don't let your thoughts consume you."

- "How can I help?"

- "You're not alone."

- "Take your time to feel better."

- "You're in control, not your anxiety."

- "Take a break if you need to."

- "You won't feel like this forever, this will pass."

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
