An Open Letter To My Roommate

Who knew I'd be tearing up while writing you this letter after knowing you for only a month.

An Open Letter To My Roommate
Debbie Kester

Dear Roommate,

During my senior year, I prayed frequently that I would find a roommate just like you. (Pretty cliche, I know, but also true.) I wanted someone who would laugh at my terrible jokes, encourage me to work my hardest, and be there when I needed her. Little did I know, God had you in mind.

One snowy day back in late January you messaged me on Facebook and said hello. We made casual conversation over the bits and pieces of information that we could collect from stalking one another on social media, and talked about the excitement of how quickly college was becoming a reality. After a few months and a couple FaceTime calls, I popped the question. I asked you to be my roommate, and from there, it was fate.

I want to take the rest of this 500 word article to thank you for being you. You are amazing. You are everything I could have ever wanted in a roommate, and now not only a roommate, but a friend. You laugh at my stupid jokes, you push me to do my hardest, and you don't care if I watch "Friends" without headphones in. There has not been a single day since I walked onto campus that I have not smiled or laughed because of you, and for that I am very thankful. I love that we share similar interests like our love for "Grey's Anatomy," orange juice, and social work. I even love the differences that we have, like how you don't like fruit chunks in your yogurt, because they bring us closer as well. I'm thankful that you accept me for who I am. I'm thankful for the nights that we can not stop laughing no matter how hard we try. I'm thankful for the mornings when we both have 8 a.m. classes and we sit and eat breakfast in our beds together. I'm thankful for the time capsule that holds a few of the many memories that we are going to make this year. I'm thankful for the texts I get when you spot my imaginary boyfriend across campus. I'm thankful for the prayers we say for each other and that we can worship freely together. I'm thankful that, even after only one month, you already know what I'm going to say before it's even formed on my lips. I'm thankful for your listening ear and your shoulder to lean on. I am thankful for the genuine kindness in your heart and the faith in your soul. I'm thankful that we get to go through this crazy thing called freshman year together.

Looking back now, I am so blessed to have accepted your friend request on Facebook. That sounds so lame and 21st century, but, I wouldn't get to be writing you this letter if God hadn't worked his miracles through Facebook. So in conclusion, just know that this is a small piece of the thankfulness that I feel to be your roommate, because if I tried to write it all out it would be too long to publish (and you would use all of your printing money trying to print it out.) Thank you roomie, for being all I ever prayed for and much more.

Dear Mom,

You took care of me and my brothers our entire lives and you still continue to! I will not be able to truly grasp all of the hard work that you put into this family until I create my own one day. But, I know that there are plenty of times I forgot to give you a simple thank you or an appreciative smile. I thank you for everything that you have done for me and will continue to do for me. Here are some examples of those times where you had my back and I forgot to pat your back for saving me:

College is hard. As people ages 18-22, we’re just trying to figure out what we’re doing with our lives, our careers, our eating habits, exercise routines, sleep patterns, and other necessities for adult life. We definitely don’t take proper care of ourselves; it’s basically impossible when we have essays, tests and readings due and somehow we’re supposed to eat right, exercise and sleep. We’re doomed to get sick. I have zero experience in science but when I get sick there are certain things I do to make myself better.

Now that it seems “talking” is the new way to date, and will stay that way until another idiotic term is used to describe the people who can’t settle down and just date someone, I feel as if it’s time to go over the unwritten rules of “talking.”

Rule 1. Having feeling without feeling.
