Anticipation Is Worse Than Reality

Seriously.

As a general rule, anticipation is a lot worse than reality. When you are worried about something, you often overanalyze what is going to happen and freak yourself out by thinking about what is the worst thing that can happen. Often times these things do not turn out as bad as you think that they will.

Let me give you an example. I am someone who hates public speaking. Seriously. If I ever had to speak in front of an extremely large crowd I would definitely need someone to calm me down. However, once I started doing the presentation, it was not as bad as I thought it was going to be. I think that the worst thing about trying something new or different is that you have a fear of what is going to happen.

The best thing that you can do for yourself when you are nervous is to just go with it. The biggest thing for public speaking for me is that I am afraid that I am going to mess up and then someone will end up judging me because of it.

Let me explain why this is an irrational fear. Everyone starts out in this world not knowing how to do anything. As you are going through life, you learn how to do new and different things. One of the best feelings in the world is to get over something that you were once afraid of.

One of my favorite quotes of all time is "Never let the fear of striking out keep you from playing the game." Yes, this quote is from A Cinderella Story. This quote is so powerful for me because in general I am a very hesitant person and I often let fear dictate my life. This is something that I plan on changing about myself.

I want to do the things that scare me in life. That's how you know that you are really alive. If you stick to what you know, then you won't really grow as a person.

If I didn't take a chance and go away to college, then I would not have the friends, opportunities, and the support system that I have today. I would not have my best friend that I have today if I didn't take chances (Love you, Diana).

Overall, I would definitely recommend that everyone tries something that is outside their comfort zone at least once a month. I know that this may seem like pretty frequently, but think about all of the new experiences that you will have to share with people. I am one of those people who also learn by other people's experiences, and I love having something new to share with my friends. This is why I am currently working on two different bucket lists; a bucket list for college and a bucket list for life.

Both of these bucket lists will be posted. I think that it could be inspiring to see how other people are conquering their fears and doing the things that they want to do. Who knows, maybe it will give you the confidence that you need in order conquer your fears.

For those long nights that turn into mornings when the struggle is real.

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate
Mental Floss

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."
