Anticipating May Flowers

"Even if you think the Big Bang created the stars, don't you wonder who sent the flowers?" - Robert Brault

Flowers make me happy. I think that's safe to say for everyone, except for the Addams Family. Since coming into April, the showers (which mostly consist of ice and freezing rain because Chicago is not the greatest place to live if you like to see natural beauty) will one day bring May flowers. In order to prepare for this time of year, I've compiled a list of some of my favorites.

11. Rose

Let's just get this out of the way. Roses are beautiful, fragrant and the pinnacle of beauty in the floral world. I mean, there's a reason why Disney uses them so much.

Don't do it, Belle. It's beautiful, but don't do it.

Girl, everyone knows you did not wake up like that.

10. Daisy

Daisies are sweet, simple, and the first branch of the Girl Scouts. And they're so friendly.

Yes, Kathleen, they really are.

9. Morning Glory

These look like they came straight out of a science fiction novel, to be honest. Which is why they're awesome and beautiful in a way that no other flower really can be.

8. Lotus

One of the prettiest flowers God ever made. Also, Mulan and Tiana are pretty big fans of them too, so I don't think there's really a question of its beauty.

Fa Zhou gets it. The late bloomers are always the most beautiful of all.

Look at its majesty. Seriously, you guys.

7. Sunflower

Sunflowers are beautiful in a different way than other flowers. They're not as delicate as other flowers and there's something admirable about their inability to crumble under the slightest touch. Like daisies, they're a friendly welcome for everyone who sees them.

6. Lilac

Lilacs have a beautiful color and fragrance. Forget smelling the roses--few people can resist smelling these when they walk by. Plus, they grow around where I stay in the Black Hills every summer, so they have an extra special place in my heart.

5. Parrot Flower

I remember seeing this flower when I was in the fifth grade and freaking out about how amazing God is. To me, this shows His handprint is everywhere. I mean, c'mon, it's a flower shaped like a parrot. That can't just be an accident.

4. Orchid

Orchids are another flower with a beautiful fragrance. Black orchids are my personal favorite. Because how many kinds of black flowers are there in the world? Pretty amazing.

3. Tulip

Tulips are and always have been one of my favorite flowers. They're different from any other flower in the way that they're structured (they don't have a bunch of little leaves or thorns trying to ruin your life when you pick them). They're another perfect spring flower.

2. Iris

I love irises because they look different from any other flower, yet have an unstated and often overlooked elegance. I see you, irises. Stay beautiful.

1. Lily of the Valley

Fond memories of gardening with my grandma come to mind when I see these. Their sweet smell is soft and comforting like no other flower and its soft, delicate structure reminds one of a time when everything was good. The lily of the valley has a very special place in my heart.

Flowers are great. As spring is upon us and our schedules become more hectic, I hope we can all take a minute sometime and stop to smell the flowers.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
