Now that we are leaving 2017, these are some of the most anticipated films of 2017 to look forward to and my personal picks that I think are worth checking out this year. There are hundreds of movies that come out every year so these are just a few of my many picks that I think everyone can enjoy.
The Mummy
I am a huge horror movie fan, and love the Universal Studios monster films such as, Frankenstein, The Wolf Man, and of course The Mummy. The new version of The Mummy will be less action more horror, which is great since I feel like that was the down fall from the 1999 remake (which I also enjoyed greatly). And this is supposed to start a new cinematic monster universe with leading man Tom Cruise, who almost always makes a film great with his appearance.
The Greatest Showman
Small film coming out next year starring Hugh Jackman playing the found of the Barnum and Bailey Circus. Jackman has shown that he can be very diverse and Bill Condon is directing who was a certain style to a film that is very poetic, and wouldn’t have chosen a better team to bring this to life.
Beauty and the Beast
The animated classic Beauty and the Beast from Disney is one of my favorite movies of all time, and reflecting my experience from The Jungle Book last year, I have a lot of faith in Disney bringing this classic to life in live-action, from the photos of the gorgeous set, to the gorgeous trailer, I am very excited to see this classic come to life.
The Dark Tower
The Dark Tower is a story about a boy that runs and finds a portal to another dimension, with monsters, space a monsters. It is described to be the Lord of the Rings meets Star Wars, and that sounds amazing to me, and films like this are the reasons why I love movies and how creative they can be.
Dunkirk
Christopher Nolan’s WWII movie is at the top of my list because in my opinion he has yet to make a bad film with a unique style of gritty suspense and beautiful looking images. If a trailer that is only less than a minute can excite me for a movie, than it must a great movie to watch in full length.
Wonder Woman
The DC Cinematic Universe has had a rough start but ever since the first trailer premiered at Comic-Con, Wonder Woman will help bring the universe to the same level as Marvel. Gal Gadot looks perfect as Wonder Woman, bringing practical action like Raiders of the Lost Ark and showing a new story for the comic book genre with its primarily female cast, show DC can bring something to the table that Marvel has yet to do, a primary female super hero.
Blade Runner 2049
I would put this film higher on the list if I have seen images or a trailer, but the sure idea of this film makes me excited. I loved Blade Runner, the story of a cop trying to exterminate and evil group of cyborgs called replicants. And with bringing back Harrison Ford as Rick Deckard and with the director of Arrival at the helm, with his gritty realism, I think this film can find a spot next year on my best of 2017 list.
Star Wars Episode VIII
Last year The Force Awakens blew expectations, and brought me back to the galaxy far far away that I loved, and Rogue One coming out showing that this franchise can be diverse, and both of them wanting more. Episode VIII will give me that need for more Star Wars has me excited for the continuing story of my favorite movie of 2015, and give me another movie to watch on my Star Wars marathons.
T2: Trainspotting
I was skeptical at first about a sequel to Trainspotting (the story about rebellious young adults dealing with drug culture in Scotland), but then I saw the trailer. It looks phenomenal, with unique camera angels, and bringing back the dysfunctional group and I am ready to see what hijinks they get into now.
Kong: Skull Island
Legendary Studios is bringing back audiences back to Skull Island and the giant ape, and it looks incredible. From the looks of the beautiful island and the awesomely deadly creatures, to the all-star cast and Kong himself who looks fantastic and menacing, which is presented for a team of soldiers that goes into the dangerous Skull Island. The film is Apocalypse Now meets Jurassic Park and with a description like that, Legendary Studios has my money already.
Some honorable mentions I have are the Marvel films, Spider-Man: Homecoming, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, and Thor: Ragnarok. Also DC’s Justice League is coming into theaters to try and establish that they can compete with Marvel. And as a wild card pick Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man Tells No Tales will showcase if the long running swashbuckling franchise is sailing smoothly or treading water.
