It finally happened. After weeks of speculation and rumors of where #1 basketball recruit Anthony Edwards would play collegiate basketball, he decided to stay home and attend the University of Georgia. On the surface, this looks to be the recruit that will change the program and finally bring a winning culture that Georgia basketball has lacked in the past few decades. However, Edwards must be surrounded by other talents in order for his signing to lead to wins for the program.
Georgia basketball has not been very good this year, only winning one game in SEC play so far this season. New head coach Tom Crean has come out and publically said that UGA basketball is rebuilding right now, which makes sense for a first-year coach. Fans for sure didn't expect the basketball program to all of a sudden turn around after firing a coach who had been with the program for several years. Despite the terrible record, UGA ended up signing Edwards, who is now the highest rated recruit to sign with Georgia in school history. It was for sure a shocking move considering SEC powerhouse Kentucky was also in the running for the top-ranked player.
So what's next for UGA on the rebuilding agenda? Surround Edwards with other talents. UGA currently has talented players on their roster, including Nicolas Claxton and Rayshaun Hammonds. Claxton currently leads the team in almost all statistical categories, including points and rebounds per game. The guy is only a sophomore too so as long as he doesn't declare for the draft, he'll be here next year for Edwards debut.
Hammonds is also a good player to surround Edwards. Another tall forward, he is right behind Claxton in points but shoots the ball more efficiently. With both guys being tall forwards who can score the basketball, this should take the pressure off Edwards to constantly be the guy to score.
Georgia is also hard at work with recruiting. Crean has already signed two four-star players this recruitment period and is looking for more. UGA has one other four-star player they have targetted in Christian Brown, another forward, who can become another great addition around Edwards. It's expected that Edwards will only play one season at UGA before heading off to the NBA draft, so surrounding him with players who are also freshman will be a huge help to Edwards transition to the college game.
Georgia is clearly in the right direction following the signing of Edwards. That kind of talent that he possesses is hard to sign for a school like UGA that has struggled in basketball as a whole. UGA's success will not only come from Edwards and his skill but from the talent, they surround him with. If UGA can sign who they need to sign in recruiting and retain some of their key players from this season, UGA can expect a better season next year than the one fans are seeing this year.
