Dear Best Friend

Yet another letter to a best friend who has never left my side.

Anyone with a best friend knows that there isn't anyone else who understands you completely like your best friend does. No one else makes you laugh quite like they do, or has been with you through thick and thin like they have.

Here's an open letter to my best friend.

Dear best friend,

First of all, thank you. Every time I’ve felt like my world was crashing down around me, you were there. When I fell in love for the first time only to have my heart broken, you told me he wasn’t good enough for me anyways. You assured me I did not need that person to feel happy and loved and most of all, I would be okay. When the next person I thought I loved left, you were there again, though I didn’t learn the first time. And as it is happening now for the third time, you are still by my side. You warned me not to get attached to another person, but I did, like you probably knew I would. You’ve heard it all so many times before, but you are still here. Not with an “I told you so,” but with an “I’m sorry you’re hurting” and “I love you unconditionally.”

Whenever life is chaotic and I feel as though I have nowhere to turn, you let me rant and listen wholeheartedly, no matter what. Crisis after crisis, you've never left my side (and I've had a lot of crises). We know each other better than anyone else because of the details we are constantly sharing with one another. I cannot imagine my life without you-- you are one of the only people in my life who I have never felt abandoned by, and I cannot thank you enough for that.

You are such a talented, beautiful, creative, strong, and intelligent young woman. I wish you could see yourself as I see you because dear, I see such potential. You are so wise, far beyond your years. You always have the best advice, even when I don't want to hear it (and when I repeatedly don't listen to you, because let’s be real, if I listened I wouldn’t be going through heartbreak number three currently). You still give me your advice, hoping one day I'll learn from my mistakes. I am so proud of you, and absolutely cannot wait to see what you do with your talents in the future.

I don’t even know if there are words to describe just how much you mean to me, but I’m trying to find them. I just want you to know that you are loved. Sometimes it will feel as though the world is caving in around you, but please know that if you ever feel like you don’t have anywhere to turn, I’m here. If you feel like there’s no hope, there is, and I’m here. I hope the people you love never break your heart, but if and when they do, I’m here. I don't ever want to see you sad, but I’m here for those times. You are so strong, and I know you can handle whatever life throws your way. You can do anything, and I believe in you completely. I’m here, and no matter what you do or what happens in your life, I’m going to love you through it. That’s a promise-- one you can count on until we’re six feet under.

I love you, best friend. Unconditionally.

With the most love,
Someone who is very grateful for you.

Do as I say, not as I do.

Your eyes widen in horror as you stare at your phone. Beads of sweat begin to saturate your palm as your fingers tremble in fear. The illuminated screen reads, "Missed Call: Mom."

Growing up with strict parents, you learn that a few things go unsaid. Manners are everything. Never talk back. Do as you're told without question. Most importantly, you develop a system and catch on to these quirks that strict parents have so that you can play their game and do what you want.

"Friends" maybe didn’t have everything right or realistic all the time, but they did have enough episodes to create countless reaction GIFs and enough awesomeness to create, well, the legacy they did. Something else that is timeless, a little rough, but memorable? Living away from the comforts of home. Whether you have an apartment, a dorm, your first house, or some sort of residence that is not the house you grew up in, I’m sure you can relate to most of these!

There is nothing quite like family.

Family is kinda like that one ex that you always find yourself running back to (except without all the regret and the angsty breakup texts that come along with it).

No matter how long your class is, there's always time for the mind to wander. Much like taking a shower or trying to fall asleep, sitting in a classroom can be a time when you get some of your best ideas. But, more than likely, you're probably just trying to mentally cope with listening to a boring lecturer drone on and on. Perhaps some of the following Aristotle-esque thoughts have popped into your head during class.

Bob's Burgers is arguably one of the best and most well-written shows on tv today. That, and it's just plain hilarious. From Louise's crazy antics to Tina's deadpan self-confidence, whether they are planning ways to take over school or craft better burgers, the Belchers know how to have fun. They may not be anywhere close to organized or put together, but they do offer up some wise words once and awhile.
