Christmas is right around the corner, and merriment is widespread. There is always a variety of feelings swirling around, whether they are joyous or melancholy, but we must remember that this time of year (as well as every time of year) is meant to remind you about loving your friends and family. While you celebrate with your loved ones, remember the loved ones that cannot physically be there. Perhaps they live too far away. Perhaps they passed away. Perhaps there is family tension. There are many reasons why you may not be with a loved one this holiday season, but please be thankful nonetheless. After conversing with a friend (who wishes to go unnamed) about this topic, he wrote a very personal and humbling poem. I asked him if it would be alright that I share it, so here it is:
It’s Christmas time all around
with people’s eyes aglow
Snow lightly kisses the ground
while people share a smile with everyone they know
The streets look festive
as the lights start to go up
the mistletoe is suggestive
fun for all the grown-ups
Spirits are filled with joy
as families come together
Carolers sing Little Drummer Boy
no matter how cold the weather
Christmas is almost here
with presents under the tree
Kids waiting for the reindeer
oh! what fun it will be
Christmas eve is a bustle
with last minute preparations
all over couples cuddle
while kids lie awake in anticipation
The day has finally come
with children jumping up and down
Merriment for all but one
with a dismal frown
This Christmas may be filled with fun
with food, presents, and cheer
But, I am missing one
because they are not here
You would have been twenty-two
but instead I will be alone
Here I am crying over you
while I stand at your gravestone
Please, do not take this time of year for granted. Extend your love to all and be thankful for each moment with everyone while you can.
