The annual Tony Awards takes place in June of this year and awards shows from the 2015-2016 season.

Every year, the Tony Awards are held in order to recognize the achievements of Broadway productions from this past year. While there are several individual awards given, you should know a little bit about the shows nominated, or more specifically, the musicals.

Here is a list of the top five must see Broadway musicals from the 2015-2016 season.


5. Bright Star

Set in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina, this moving musical tells the story of Billy Cane, a young boy returning home from the war who meets beautiful journalist, Alice Murphy. In this story, set between 1923 and 1945, the two discover a secret that will alter their lives forever.


4. The Color Purple

This heart-wrenching musical follows the life of Celie, a fourteen-year-old girl from Georgia who is forced by her abusive father to marry a cruel farmer whom they call "Mister". In this production, we witness the importance of strength, resilience, and love.


3. Fiddler on the Roof

This musical is about life, love, and family. We follow the story of Reb Tevye, a poor milkman who is trying his best while managing his five daughters. When he attempts to arrange marriages for them, a Jewish custom and tradition, the strong-willed daughters fight against it in order to marry the men that they really love.


2. School of Rock

This hilarious production follows the life of wannabe rock star, Dewey Finn, who poses as a substitute teacher at a prep school and discovers the musical abilities of several of his students. Through forming a band out of these talented fifth graders and entering them into a contest called The Battle of Bands, Dewey learns about what it means to be a band and not just a star.



1. Hamilton

This breath-taking musical follows the story of one of our founding fathers who was determined to make his mark on this new nation. This man being Alexander Hamilton. From being a poor orphan, to serving next to George Washington and becoming a war hero and husband, we witness the story behind a political mastermind and his harsh demise through the use of modern hip hop music and dance.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated.
