After Attending Anime Midwest, Here Are Some Helpful Insight On Conventions

This last weekend I went to my first convention ever called Anime Midwest! I wanted to write a review of my experience in case anyone out there is considering going to a convention. I'd also like to add some tips and tricks I learned to help make your experience go smoothly.

Anime Midwest is one of the most well-known conventions that is held in Rosemont, Illinois every summer. For those who don't know what happens at a convention or what to do, there are a few different types of activities. First, there is a whole section dedicated to rows of vendors who sell their own art and other unique products. There were so many goodies there to buy, so it was so hard for me not to buy everything!

Tip #1: Make sure to bring plenty of money.

Bringing a credit or debit card is good, but some vendors only take cash. Bringing money for food will also be convenient. To be honest, I found it very helpful to bring a bag of snacks. The convention has a "Consweet" where they give out free ramen and rice.

Next, there are panels, which range from fun and cool games to simply talking about a certain show or topic. There are many panels each day, all run differently. You can find panels for any show or interest you have.

Tip #2: Arrive at the panel early.

I learned this the hard way! I was not able to get into several that I wanted to because it was too crowded. For example, if there is a panel at 2 PM, arrive about 15 minutes early. It is a smart move to look at the panels being held beforehand and make a rough schedule of which ones you really want to go to. This can help since there are so many to choose from, and it can be overwhelming. Another good idea is to look at a map beforehand, even just a little before the panel, so you know where it is or you are able to easily find it well before it begins.

Tip #3: Get your pass mailed to you before the convention.

I did not get mine in the mail, which means I had to wait in line for two hours to get one. Order in advance if possible! My weekend pass was around $40, but it goes up to $80 once it gets closer to the convention date.

This convention is a very fun one! I definitely plan to go back. Apart from learning these tips the hard way, it went very well. My friend and I split the hotel rooms with six other people, cutting down on the cost and saving everyone money. The people were very nice. It was great to just nerd out and talk about anime for the weekend. I bought a lot of merch, met some fun people, and got to cosplay a few of my favorite characters. I highly recommend Anime Midwest. If you can't make it, hit one up closer to you.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
