Why You Should Support Animal Cruelty Prevention Month
ASPCA

When you think about the month of April, the first things that come to mind are likely April Fool’s Day, Earth Day, spring weather (hopefully!) or Tax Day. April is an important month for another reason to all of our furry companions; the ASPCA has dubbed it “Prevention of Cruelty to Animals” month. According to the ASPCA, an animal is abused every 60 seconds. This organization, headquartered in New York, helps deal with animal homelessness and various types of animal cruelty, such as dog fighting, puppy mills, animal hoarding, factory farms, horse slaughter and more. It may seem there are not many things a college student could do to help in the fight against animal cruelty, but here are a few ideas:

1. Report cruelty and/or neglect.

This is probably the most important step in helping prevent animal cruelty, as a huge number of cases of animal abuse go undocumented. To properly report animal abuse, give a written statement of what was observed, as well as approximate dates, times and locations to local law enforcement. If possible, provide photographs, but no individual should be put into danger for photographic evidence. Keep a record of who you contacted and when, as well as a copy of any documents given to law enforcement. Some animal abuse is easy to see, such as an owner physically abusing an animal, but some signs of neglect include an animal being tied up outside for long periods of time without food and water, extreme emaciation, inadequate grooming or wounds or illnesses that appear to be untreated.

2. Take the ASPCA Pledge.

Taking this pledge is very easy on the ASPCA website. It simply states that each individual signing up will do what they can to speak out against animal cruelty and support law enforcement agencies in their endeavors to minimize animal abuse and neglect.

3. Volunteer at a local shelter.

This can make a world of difference to the cats, dogs and other animals living in shelters. The most well-known ones near downtown Pittsburgh are the Humane Society on the North Shore and Animal Friends on Camp Horne Road. Even if you can only go once a month, this is a great way to show support to animals.

4. Wear Orange.

Orange is the official color for animal cruelty prevention. Wear orange this month to bring awareness to the cause you are supporting!

5. Set a good example for others.

When you are in contact with animals, do what you can to show the proper way to handle them! This can be especially important when in the presence of small children, as they learn by example. If they see someone else treating an animal with kindness, they are more likely to do so themselves.

6. Join the ASPCA Advocacy Brigade.

This, again, is very easy to sign up for on the ASPCA website. This is taking things a step further than the ASPCA Pledge. People in the Advocacy Brigade will receive emails when help is needed in their area, as well as invitations to local advocacy events and online advocacy tutorials.

7. Monetary donations.

Even just a few dollars a month can help send animals to safety, get animals adopted into loving homes or give animals their necessary vaccinations. Donations can be made on the ASPCA’s website.

There are ways for individuals to show their support for animal rights and actually prevent animal abuse and cruelty. Do your part this month to put an end to animal cruelty.

Bob's Burgers
Adult Swim

Bob's Burgers is arguably one of the best and most well-written shows on tv today. That, and it's just plain hilarious. From Louise's crazy antics to Tina's deadpan self-confidence, whether they are planning ways to take over school or craft better burgers, the Belchers know how to have fun. They may not be anywhere close to organized or put together, but they do offer up some wise words once and awhile.

We're in college, none of us actually have anything together. In fact, not having anything together is one of our biggest stressors. However, there's a few little things that we do ever so often that actually make us feel like we have our lives together.

1. Making yourself dinner

And no this does not include ramen or Annie's Mac & Cheese. Making a decent meal for yourself is one of the most adult things you can do living on campus. And the food is much better than it would be at the dining hall.

I think the hardest thing about going away to college is figuring out how to become an adult. Leaving a household where your parents took care of literally everything (thanks, Mom!) and suddenly becoming your own boss is overwhelming. I feel like I'm doing a pretty good job of being a grown-up, but once in awhile I do something that really makes me feel like I'm #adulting. Twenty-somethings know what I'm talking about.

I went to a small high school, like 120-people-in-my-graduating-class small. It definitely had some good and some bad, and if you also went to a small high school, I’m sure you’ll relate to the things that I went through.

1. If something happens, everyone knows about it

Who hooked up with whom at the party? Yeah, heard about that an hour after it happened. You failed a test? Sorry, saw on Twitter last period. Facebook fight or, God forbid, real fight? It was on half the class’ Snapchat story half an hour ago. No matter what you do, someone will know about it.

Chandler Bing

I'm assuming that we've all heard of the hit 90's TV series, Friends, right? Who hasn't? Admittedly, I had pretty low expectations when I first started binge watching the show on Netflix, but I quickly became addicted.

Without a doubt, Chandler Bing is the most relatable character, and there isn't an episode where I don't find myself thinking, Yup, Iam definitely the Chandler of my friend group.
