Andy's All-Time Top 10 Christmas Songs

Tunes that put me in a festive spirit (and one that that induces insanity).

Avoiding any pretentious verbosity or eloquence, Christmas tunes are my jam! Blood sugar still high from all the Halloween Candy and the pumpkin barely rotting, my neighbors can expect an aural assault in the form of Christmas music no later than the first day of November. Breaks will be taken for music more secular and in no way related to the Christmas season, but it's not too far a stretch to suggest that during the middle of my most gangsta fueled tirade of a Wu-Tang rhyme, the holiday spirit might take hold and compel me to transition from wannabe thug to the merriest man this side of the north pole. I even play Christmas music throughout the year just to lift my spirits when things are looking down.

There is, in case you hadn't noticed, as many Christmas songs recorded as there are flakes of snow on Antartica, so choosing among them my favorites is an arduous task. Select one version of a song, and I feel as though I'm betraying another beloved version of the same song. Accept if it's a version by Bing Crosby I'm choosing. Bing always wins.

In any case, that's what I set out to do, to select the cream of the crop. Some of these were easy-peasy to pick out, but others needed intense deliberation to decide which version I like best. A few are very traditionally Christian (surprise) and others more secular. Well, without further ado, here are...

My All-Time Top 10 Christmas Songs, starting from 10.

10. "Happy Xmas (War Is Over)" - John Lennon, Yoko Ono, and the Harlem Community Choir

9. "The Chipmunk Song (Christmas Don't Be Late)" - Alvin & The Chipmunks

8. "Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy" - Tchaikovsky

7. "Peace On Earth/Little Drummer Boy" - Bing Crosby & David Bowie

6. "Silent Night" - Boyz II Men

5. "Joy to the World" - Mormon Tabernacle Choir

4. "I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus" - Jackson 5

3. "Holly Jolly Christmas" - Burl Ives

2. "Auld Lang Syne" - ALL THE VERSIONS (almost)

1. "Adeste Fidelis" - Bing Crosby

Fingers crossed you enjoyed my list, and potentially heard a version of a song you've never before heard. Possessing a vast collection encompassing more than a thousand songs, this selection process was intense, aside from first three selections.

Of course, there are a few Christmas songs I wouldn't touch with a thirty nine and a half foot pole, one of which I'll feature below. Truly I abhor this song with every fiber of my being:

"Last Christmas" - Wham

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
