As coronavirus deaths in New York have grown to over 9,500 and confirmed cases nearing 200,000 according to Johns Hopkins University, the Governor believes that stricter measures must be taken to protect all of the citizens of New York.
According to the CDC, coronavirus "spread happens when an infected person coughs, sneezes, or talks, and droplets from their mouth or nose are launched into the air and land in the mouths or noses of people nearby. The droplets can also be inhaled into the lungs."
Social distancing, as a practice, helps to prevent this. But, when social distancing cannot be observed, that leaves people at a much greater risk for inhaling the disease into their lungs. Face masks and covering drastically change the situation by adding a layer between an infected person and those in their immediate are.
