And On The Seventh Day, God Rested.

Why I am a firm believer in resting.

We’re bad at resting. Our society tells us to run as fast as we can because if we stop or if we take our eye of the prize, then we’ll be left behind. In societies standards, everyday needs to be packed full of work and productivity. Just think about all the things we’re expected to do in our lives. You’re supposed to work hard at your job, keep a clean and well-kept home, develop good friendships, have a good family life, workout and eat right, keep up with the latest technology, keep up with the latest fashion trends…oh and don’t forget to document this all on your social media in a way that makes you seem like you have it all together. I don’t know about you, but I get exhausted just reading that list.

Of course, working hard is good. Sloth is one of the seven deadly sins, so I’m not saying you should sit around doing nothing and feel good about that either. However, I do think we all could do a better job at allowing for margin in our life. Give yourself a day. Just one day where you don’t get everything done on that list, and be okay with it! If you can’t sacrifice a whole day, just try sitting for 30 minutes just soaking in the joy of life. It sounds kind of pointless, but I love doing this. Just sit down and think about how blessed you are to be alive. It’s really therapeutic for me and puts things back in perspective.

If I am not enough to convince you that rest should be a priority, take into account the fact that even God rested. In the book of Genesis, it tells us that after God had created the heavens and the earth in six days, He rested on the seventh. Do you think God needed to rest? No, of course not. He’s God. I’m sure He wasn’t physically or mentally exhausted, but He values rest after a good and hard work is accomplished. If God who does not need rest took a day off, how important is it for us humans who need rest to take a day off once in a while? I’d say it’s pretty important.

I just finished a hard and grueling semester of 18.5 credits. I completed a good and hard work. So I’m kicking my feet up and relaxing a bit completely guilt-free because I believe rest is so important for us all.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."

It's the most wonderful time of the year! Christmas is one of my personal favorite holidays because of the Christmas traditions my family upholds generation after generation. After talking to a few of my friends at college, I realized that a lot of them don't really have "Christmas traditions" in their family, and I want to help change that. It’s here; that time of year when college students turn into preschoolers again. We cry for our mothers, eat everything in sight, and whine when we don’t get our way. It’s finals, the dreaded time of the semester when we all realize we should have been paying attention in class instead of literally doing anything else but that. Everyone has to take them, and yes, unfortunately, they are inevitable. But just because they are here and inevitable does not mean they’re peaches and cream and full of rainbows. Surviving them is a must, and the following five phases are a reality for all majors from business to art, nursing to history.
