Last week was the 2016 Presidential Elections as well elections for other political offices. Hillary Clinton faced Donald Trump. The result, Madam Clinton conceded via phone call to Trump at 2:10am. Twiiter, Facebook, Snapchat, media nationwide has been abrupt and angry. Slandering, hatred, rage, and sadness is surrounding a large portion of country.
I was watched the campaigns of both candidates from their inception to election day and seen their strategies in obtaining their respective powers. My personal political stance will be null and void in this piece but I will provide a small analysis of key points in this presidential election, based on things I noticed or analysts have briefly discussed.
First and foremost, both candidates have been extremely resilient in campaigning throughout the 50 states and rallying supporters. But what happened? Madam Clinton won the popular vote but not the election. The first small key I heard through analyst George Lomeli on CNN this morning was the idea of nurture vs nature. Trump came in from an administrative standpoint, doing finance and logistics and that’s how he viewed the country moving forward. From Madam Clinton, she became America’s sweetheart. He stated “There’s a difference from gaining a vote versus gaining the favor”. And this is true. Gaining a vote means that vote counts towards your election. Gaining the favor of someone simply means they will favor you. Trump focused on obtaining votes from the country than being their sweetheart. For flip states like Ohio and Florida, this was true.
Secondly, as stated Donald Trump is a business man. And because of that he knew channels and markets to which he could distribute and promote himself well enough to have a presence in the media. Madam Clinton, had every ad and every channel and website and social outlet running campaign slogans and content. Looking at it from a financial standpoint, Madam Clinton has raised and spent $718 million in finances for this 19-month campaign. Trump has raised and spent $255 million over his 17-month campaign. Trump only spent a little over a third of Madam Clinton’s entire campaign funds. So this makes me wonder, with that much money being used, how did she not win the election? What was the spent on?
Thirdly, the key states. Florida, Pennsylvania, Ohio. In no election has these states ever been straight forward in their electoral votes. The tide was always switching, especially with Pennsylvania last night. Only about 20% of the state voted Clinton while the rest was complete Trump. Florida was another tossup as the tide kept switching. Ohio is a very key state most don’t know about. In every U.S. presidential election, no candidate has one without Ohio’s electoral votes, save for 1960. My good friend Bobby Varghese of Queens, NY researched and found that in 1960 Nixon won Ohio but President John F Kennedy won the election. But later on, we see Nixon winning the Presidency. Either way, Ohio has been pro-Trump since the inception of his campaign back in 2015.
Lastly, a major key in this election was not the country choosing Clinton or Trump, but rather choosing a woman or a man to lead the nation. Outside of movies or TV shows, the idea of the commander in chief being a woman, is still new to the country. At least in Obama's campaign, it was getting a person of color, a person of culture into the white house. A man, nonetheless. To the angry social media blokes making posts and pictures and protests, this was not an election of Clinton versus Trump; it was an election of woman versus man. This is not to say that Clinton wouldn't have made a good president, I am sure she would have made a phenomenal president, especially with her prior experience and civic duty she's done for the country. This was simply a moment of acknowledgement that the country, the nation and the people are still growing.
It took 44 presidential elections to have man of color in office. You can only imagine how long it will be for women to obtain the oval office.
