Why You Need To Start Listening To The Neighbourhood

They are rarely seen in anything other than black and white.

There is no greater joy than seeing your favorite band perform a great show. To make it even better, being super close to the stage is a bonus. On June 15, I got the opportunity to see my favorite band, The Neighbourhood, live for the second time. I can easily say that this was by far the best show that I have ever been to.

Formed in Newbury Park, California, in 2011, the band is made up of lead singer Jesse Rutherford, guitarists Jeremy Freedman and Zach Abels, bassist Michael Margott, and current drummer Brandon Fried (former drummer Bryan Sammis). They are considered an indie rock band with some hip hop influences.

After releasing three singles, they released their first album "I Love You." Following that, they released a mixtape for free download in November 2014. Most recently, their album "Wiped Out!" was released in October 2015.

No matter where or when you see them, their shows are always fantastic. The band is very good at getting the crowd into their performance. The order of their set list always flows so perfectly.

The way that the band presents itself is one of the reasons that they are my favorite. They are very strict about having everything be in black and white. They do this so that their band focuses on their music and not who they are. It forces them to be in control and since the outside world is in color, it allows them not to conform.

Another thing is their logo, an upside down house. The band wanted something that people would remember, since a logo is important. The house came from the band name, naturally, and they wanted to make it aesthetically pleasing. There isn't a significant reason as to why it was upside, but they just thought it looked cool, as do I.

Lastly, all of their songs have meaning. A lot of their older songs were written by the boys, straight out of high school. The songs reflect a lot of their high school problems, mostly heartbreak. They are put together in a way that the meaning does not have to be overthought. More so now, they make you think a little more, but still have an easy to think about meaning. It is important to be able to genuinely understand and relate to songs.

The band is becoming more and more popular and rising up the charts. They have definitely come a long way since 2011, and I am excited to see my favorite band grow in 2016 and the future years to come.

Here is a Spotify playlist with all of my favorite songs by them, including Single, Daddy Issues, R.I.P 2 My Youth, $ting and a few more!

girl with a hat

This is for the girls who have dealt with an emotionally, mentally, physically or verbally abusive father.

The ones who have grown up with a false lens of what love is and how relationships should be. The ones who have cried themselves to sleep wondering why he hurts you and your family so much. This is for all the girls who fall in love with broken boys that carry baggage bigger than their own, thinking it's their job to heal them because you watched your mother do the same.

Blair Waldorf Quote
"DESTINY IS FOR LOSERS. IT'S JUST A STUPID EXCUSE TO WAIT FOR THINGS TO HAPPEN INSTEAD OF MAKING THEM HAPPEN." - BLAIR WALDORF.

The world stopped in 2012 when our beloved show "Gossip Girl" ended. For six straight years, we would all tune in every Monday at 9:00 p.m. to see Upper Eastside royalty in the form of a Burberry headband clad Blair Waldorf. Blair was the big sister that we all loved to hate. How could we ever forget the epic showdowns between her and her frenemy Serena Van Der Woodsen? Or the time she banished Georgina Sparks to a Christian summer camp? How about that time when she and her girls took down Bart Bass? Blair is life. She's taught us how to dress, how to be ambitious, and most importantly, how to throw the perfect shade.

too tired to care

We've all been there. From move-in day to the first finals week in college, your first term is an adventure from start to finish. In honor of college decisions coming out recently, I want to recap some of the most common experiences college freshmen experience.

1. The awkward hellos on move-in day.

You're moving your stuff onto your floor, and you will encounter people you don't know yet in the hallway. They live on your floor, so you'll awkwardly smile and maybe introduce yourself. As you walk away, you will wonder if they will ever speak to you again, but don't worry, there's a good chance that you will make some great friends on your floor!

Recently I completed my freshman year of college, and boy, what an experience. It was a completely new learning environment and I can't believe how much I learned. In an effort to save time, here are the ten biggest lessons I learned from my first year of college.

1. Everyone is in the same boat

For me, the scariest part of starting school was that I was alone, that I wouldn't be able to make any friends and that I would stick out. Despite being told time and time again that everyone had these same feelings, it didn't really click until the first day when I saw all the other freshman looking as uneasy and uncomfortable as me. Therefore, I cannot stress this enough, everyone is feeling as nervous as you.
