Dear Tomi Lahren ,
I just want to start this letter by letting you know that you and I don't see eye to eye on a lot of political issues, and that's okay. I don't hold that against you, and hope you don't hold that against me. As a woman, it makes me proud to see other women actively comment on politics, since traditionally, we are left out and under-represented. I may not agree with your videos, but I do appreciate that you're out there motivating women to listen and to use their political voice. That being said, I, as a woman, am hurt and taken aback by this recent video of yours that addresses the #TrumpTapes.
As I pointed out, I really don't care and am not offended that you and I don't see the world the same way. Since day one, Trump has been your candidate, and the Republican platform has fit your ideology. It's your choice and yours alone to continue supporting Trump after these tapes surfaced and throughout this campaign. I'm not trying to change that or convince you to vote a different way.
What I do care about is the way you brushed off his comments like they should just be expected. You start your video by saying nothing about the lewd comments caught on tape are good, and then you completely defend them and perpetuate rape culture. Just because Donald Trump is a "business man millionaire and not the Pope," doesn't mean he gets a free pass. Quite frankly, that attitude supports the idea that men cannot be held accountable for their actions and women should be the ones trying to avoid being raped. It's 2016. I think we've all agreed that isn't the case.
It's really never appropriate for anyone, man or woman, rich or poor, old or young, to speak of another human being that way. No one should be so entitled that they feel they can grab another human being by the genitals. Sorry, Ms. Lahren, but I really don't understand how you just brushed aside Donald's comments. I can't understand how rape culture doesn't offend you or make you hurt for other women who have fallen victim to men who think they can treat people however they want. I know that it's unrealistic to expect all people to see rape culture for what it is, but you have the opportunity to shed light and understanding on important issues, and rape culture is certainly one of those. I'm sad you missed your opportunity by giving Trump a free pass.
That being said, I hope you continue to add to the political conversation. Just remember that women need to look out for one another, even if it means standing up to a business man millionaire once in a while.
