Why You Sometimes Just Need To Watch A Rom-Com

An Open Letter To Those Who Doubt Romantic Comedies

To those who doubt the power of a Rom-Com,

Romantic comedies are more than just "chick-flicks." They are also a fun way to watch ridiculous, unrealistic situations play out. I mean let's be honest, the plots of 99% of Rom-Com's could never happen. People can't go from absolutely loathing each other to being madly in love in under 24 hours. Nor does the girl move to a big city and get the apartment, job and guy of her dreams in an unrealistic amount of time. But besides some major plot holes and moments that make you just go, "What is happening?" you come out of it feeling hopeful for love or at least entertained for an hour or two.

In a world that's serious enough, sometimes you just need to watch other people make mistakes and see how long you can bear watching some unbelievably awkward situations. Personally, I'm really tired of this whole hook-up and dating apps culture. I know that many people may disagree with me on this topic, but through watching a countless number or romantic comedies, both good and bad, there is a small part of me that wants to have a chance of meeting someone special.

The simple fact that there are so many types of romantic comedies, made me realize that there is a romantic comedy out there for everyone. Although most of these "chick-flicks" do have the same basic plot, it's the little details that make the movies different. I believe that it is the simplicity of the basic plot that makes the movie more entertaining. If a plot gets very confusing, I find it less enjoyable to watch.

I know Rom-Com's are not everybody's cup of tea, but there are times when no other film genre can fill that spot. There are times when you need that perfect balance of cheesy and heartfelt. Sometimes, there is nothing like a Hallmark movie or watching "27 Dresses" and "13 Going on 30" for the 1000th time.

Romantic comedies are a great way to de-stress and forget about your problems. These types of movies make me wish that in all my romantic revelations I had a fountain light up and Celine Dion playing in the background (10 points if anyone knows what movie I'm referencing). They've made me realize Prince Charming isn't all that he seems, and sometimes your white knight is the person who's been there all along.

It's shocking, I know, but a good rom-com can even teach you something. So even though they may get the short end of the cinema stick, give a Romantic comedy a chance and it may surprise you.

Sincerely,

A Girl Who Still Believes

I think the hardest thing about going away to college is figuring out how to become an adult. Leaving a household where your parents took care of literally everything (thanks, Mom!) and suddenly becoming your own boss is overwhelming. I feel like I'm doing a pretty good job of being a grown-up, but once in awhile I do something that really makes me feel like I'm #adulting. Twenty-somethings know what I'm talking about.

I went to a small high school, like 120-people-in-my-graduating-class small. It definitely had some good and some bad, and if you also went to a small high school, I’m sure you’ll relate to the things that I went through.

1. If something happens, everyone knows about it

Who hooked up with whom at the party? Yeah, heard about that an hour after it happened. You failed a test? Sorry, saw on Twitter last period. Facebook fight or, God forbid, real fight? It was on half the class’ Snapchat story half an hour ago. No matter what you do, someone will know about it.

Chandler Bing

I'm assuming that we've all heard of the hit 90's TV series, Friends, right? Who hasn't? Admittedly, I had pretty low expectations when I first started binge watching the show on Netflix, but I quickly became addicted.

Without a doubt, Chandler Bing is the most relatable character, and there isn't an episode where I don't find myself thinking, Yup, Iam definitely the Chandler of my friend group.

Working with the public can be a job, in and of itself. Some people are just plain rude for no reason. But regardless of how your day is going, always having to be in the best of moods, or at least act like it... right?

1. When a customer wants to return a product, hands you the receipt, where is printed "ALL SALES ARE FINAL" in all caps.

2. Just because you might be having a bad day, and you're in a crappy mood, doesn't make it okay for you to yell at me or be rude to me. I'm a person with feelings, just like you.

3. People refusing to be put on hold when a customer is standing right in front of you. Oh, how I wish I could just hang up on you!
