For those of you who are upset,
The election is over, yet I feel like I'm still being drowned in Trump vs Hillary debates. In the last couple of days I have witnessed many people cry, argue, post hateful things on social media, and even sit down during the pledge of allegiance because of the outcome of this critical election. Many are angered and frustrated, but we must keep moving forward. There is nothing you can do at this point to go back in time to change the outcome (unless you have a time machine in which case you could).
It's time we embrace the results and learn that sometimes in life we don't get our way. It is illogical to revert back into children and whine and fight about the decision this country has made. How are we supposed to become a greater nation and society if we don't cooperate with one another and act maturely?
We endlessly and patriotically fight for our beliefs, but sometimes at the end of the day others prevail. The mature thing to do is suck it up and shake the other persons hand. Yes, yes the situation is a little more important than a football game or a spelling bee, but the same concept remains. We must look past our differences and embrace our similarities. Only united can this country keep striving for success. We continuously preach equality and love, yet the same people promoting those beliefs are the ones promoting hate after this election. Wanting to ostracize people with different beliefs than you is shameful, and only promotes hate.
It is hypocritical to stand for equality to then discriminate against someone with different beliefs. Just because someone isn't a minority, doesn't mean you have the right to discriminate and patronize them. Both Liberals and Republicans who were against Trump are acting as immature as they claim him to be. Ironic, right? Trump has wrongfully spoken about certain topics, but we must keep in mind that this country has become such a safe haven for people because we live in a system of checks and balances where one person cannot become more powerful than the other. Not everything he says he wants to do will actually happen. For example if you are a legal immigrant you will not be deported, do don't freak out.
There is no reason to be scared for your future if we, as Americans, can learn to unite and fight for progress instead of fighting each other. It shocks me how judgmental those who claim to be "open-minded" are being. Sometimes we just need to step back, take a deep breathe, and look at the positives. Yes, sometimes it is just that easy. Relax!! Keep an open mind.
How would you feel if Hillary won and Trump supporters went out and did what Hillary supporters are doing right now? Because nothing can be done, Trump is president. Your candidate didn't win. It's disappointing, but life moves on. You can't get a trophy for everything you do. Be as mature as you say you are and channel your anger positively. You can't always win. Don't burn down the country, bring it together.
Protesting two days after the fact will not change anything. Saying Trump is not your president will not do anything besides increase the hate among the people of the United States. People are calling for violence in these protests, which is so unnecessary. Screaming obscenities will not help your cause. You are furthering the divide. Voice your opinion, but do it positively. At this point, wanting Trump to fail is like being on an airplane and wanting your captain to crash. We must hope for the best and prepare for the worst.
If we can all relax and give Trump a chance, he may surprise us. But until then, let's all remember that we are all American. It shouldn't be Democrats vs. Republicans or Liberals vs. Conservatives. We should stop wasting our efforts on protesting the results of the election that will not be reversed, and focus our energy towards uniting as a people and working towards a common positive goal. Everyone of all races, genders, ideologies, beliefs, and religions should work hard in trying to understand one another rather than put each other down. Only united we can prevail.
Sincerely,
A millennial who's sick of the fighting
