An Open Letter To The Women Like Me

Be weird, be artsy, keep daydreaming.

This is for the women like me.

You and me, we've faced our demons and accepted our flaws. We can admit that we didn't quite know who we were for a while, but through personal trials, we began seeing ourselves and the world around us in a whole new light. We learned of our own beauty, and it flourished in our hearts like the wing beats of one-hundred butterflies.

If you're anything like me, you've got three pairs of good pants, a knee-high stack of comic books, and your hands are always covered in paint and pencil smudges instead of makeup swatches. You used to look at all of the beautiful women around you and ask yourself "Why can't I look like them?" Then you learned how to appreciate the beauty of another woman without diminishing your own. You are your very own kind of beautiful, a totally different spirit. Own it, and let it shine out of you.

Don't get too upset with someone who gets an attitude with you about your daydreaming. Your brain just can't stay in one place; as a result, it wanders off sometimes...but that's OK, we all lose our mind a little sometimes. Additionally, it's perfectly fine to be more interested in cartoons than reality shows. Do reality shows teach friendship and kindness, and the nobility of telling the truth? I think not...

Women like you and I, we love to laugh. Let your laugh be heard loud and proud! So what if your laugh is funny? It will make someone else laugh even harder and then you've been someone's reason to smile. Be your loud, hilarious self, unapologetically. Smile as often as you want, and be as friendly and kind as you want to be! Who cares what other people think? If you've made one person smile you've done a good deed.

Women like me: be weird, be crazy, be artsy. Daydream, live on and don't let anyone stop you. Women like you and I are often overlooked in today's society for women with more beautiful bodies or more symmetrical faces. They are art, but so are we. Embrace your weirdness and don't let anyone try to change you because you are beautiful the way you are

As college students, we are all familiar with the horror show that is course registration week. Whether you are an incoming freshman or selecting classes for your last semester, I am certain that you can relate to how traumatic this can be.

1. When course schedules are released and you have a conflict between two required classes.

Bonus points if it is more than two.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
