An Open Letter To The Strongest Girl I Know

Most people don't experience in a lifetime what you have by 18.

An Open Letter To The Strongest Girl I Know

I was brand new on campus, but so was every other freshman. I was particularly nervous about fitting in and finding my "Christina Yang" in college because I've heard my older friends talk about their person they found on campus. It was about a month into school when I finally met this person. She was wearing a cute purple dress and had the cutest red head pixie cut that I've never seen someone pull off so well. I knew something was special about her. A few weeks later, we were best friends.

To the strongest girl I know,

I cannot begin to express how much I love you. You are, by far, the most wonderful and talented woman I've ever met in my life. You are gorgeous inside and out, and you carry yourself with such confidence and poise that I wish I could. I love how you always look like a supermodel even when you have sweatpants and no makeup on. You have this personality that just makes me smile when I think about it. Your sense of humor compliments mine perfectly and there is never a time when we're together and not laughing. I could not imagine not having met you this year and having your beautiful smile light up my life the way it does every day.

You are so strong because life hasn't handed everything to you on a silver platter. I couldn't imagine you accepting it that way either. You're a fighter. You get what you want because you work so extremely hard for it. Your work ethic goes unmatched by any person I've ever met and I'm constantly in awe of how you take life by the horns. You've taught me so many things about how I should see the world. The phrase "the glass is half full" makes me think of you and your constantly smiling face. I can never thank you enough for this lesson.

You live life to the fullest and you keep yourself busy. I don't know a single person on campus who moves through life the way you do. You make it look easy and you make us look bad! Although I know life is not as easy for you as it looks from our perspective, you handle things with such grace and ease. It breaks my heart every time you say someone has hurt you or life isn't working out for you the way you had wished, but what makes me so amazed is how you handle it. You're always the bigger person when someone has done you wrong and you are always the one who keeps her sanity when the world is hectic. Moog, I cannot express how much I covet your ability to save face during those situations.

I love you with every fiber of my body and I want you to know I will always be here for you. Though you allow me to place my problems on you, I want you to know you can also lighten your load on me a little! I trust no one better than you to give me a bias-free opinion as well as some really good advice. Thank you for being you and thank you for showing me that being strong is the best thing you can be.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
