An Open Letter To The Ones Who Are Fighting A Storm

Trust me when I say you've still got fight left in you.

To the ones who are going through a storm,

You are greater than the storm that you are going through, whether it be a big storm, or a small one. You are much more than the flood waters that seem to be pulling you under. It may feel like in this moment you can’t swim, and it may feel as if it’s easier to let the water pull you under than to keep fighting, it isn’t.

Let me tell you this: you are worth it. I know you can keep swimming, keep fighting.

On one of my favorite TV shows, "Grey's Anatomy", Meredith Grey thinks that the only thing to do is to give up the fight, and she starts to drown. Minutes later Derek saves her. He saves her because he knows that her fight isn’t over yet. The same goes for each of you.

I may not know all of you on a personal level, but I do know that you are so wonderful, and you still have fight left in you. Dig down deep if you have to, and pull it out. Push past the feelings that cause you to want to give up the fight. Get rid of the people in your life who make you feel as if all the fight has left your body, and fill those voids with people who remind you that the fight is still worth fighting, because it is. You have a purpose. You have a reason. God has great plans for you, and He so desperately wants to see and help you fulfill those. God recently placed a girl in my life, her name is Rebecca, and she has pushed me, loved me, and forced me to see all the wonderfulness of who I am. Those are the types of people you need to fill your life with, because those are the types of people that will help you to keep fighting when it seems as if there isn’t any fight left.

Something I was always told was that without all the rain, there would never be rainbows. I suppose that is true, and hey rainbows are pretty to look at. Think about that: if you don’t go through these storms, you won’t be able to appreciate the rainbow at the end of it.

Another thing that always gets me through the storms is the idea that God has got me. He has my life planned out, and He wouldn’t give me a certain hardship, storm or challenge if He didn’t think that I could make it through it. He is by my side every step of the way, all I need to do is need Him.

So as you are fighting your next storm, just remember those things, take a deep breath, and fight with all of your might because I know that you can get through it. Just think, the rainbow that follows will be beautiful.

In case you're unaware, "resting bitch face" is the term used to describe when a person's natural, expressionless face makes it look like they are mad at the world. Whether they are walking down the street or simply spacing out thinking about what to eat for dinner, it's very easy for others to assume that this person is either upset or mad at them. Because of this, those of us with Resting Bitch Face (RBF), and especially us women, have all experienced many of the same situations and conversations, including:

We've all had a crush before. Whether it leads to something or nothing, the process has all been the same. The awkward feelings, the stalking, and the stress of trying to keep this huge secret. The feeling of becoming a total spazz is something that cannot be avoided, and the most spazzy family that can relate to this feeling is the Belcher's.

At the tender age of 18, we are bestowed with the title of “adult.” For 17 years, we live under the rules and guidelines of our parents, school, and government, and to stray from any of those rules or guidelines marks us as a rebel. At 18, though, we must choose which college we want to go to or what career we want. We are allowed and encouraged to vote. We can buy lottery tickets and cigarettes. We can drop out of school, leave our household, and do other "adult" things. At 18, we start down a path of thinking for ourselves, when for the entirety of our lives other institutions have been mandated to think and do for us.

What about those of us who don't do it all in four years?

"College will be the best four years of your life" is a phrase that we have all heard growing up. College is painted as a magical place to us while we are in high school. A place you go to learn, meet your best friends and probably have the time of your life while all of this is going down. Four whirlwind years, where everything that you've known changes and you start to learn what it means to live on your own, have a job, etc. But what about those of us who don't do this all in four years? Major changes, hard courses, switching schools, career paths changing, these are just a handful of factors that could extend your four years to five, six or seven. There is nothing wrong with taking extra time to graduate, but returning as a fifth-year is a little different. Most of your best friends have most likely graduated and moved and while you may be one of the oldest undergraduates on campus, you might feel as awkward as a freshmen. A world that became home and comfortable to you is still there but it's slightly different than you've known it to be and you have to find a groove to fall into. These are thoughts you'll have as you look ahead to returning to your college campus, with a victory lap planned.
