An Open Letter to the Men and Women Serving Our Country

You will always be a hero in my eyes

An Open Letter to the Men and Women Serving Our Country
U.S. Army

To the brave men and women who choose to put their lives on the line to make sure my life is one with freedom:

Thank you. I truly cannot say that enough. Thank you, thank you, thank you. Your bravery is not overlooked or forgotten. I speak for the entire country in saying that without you, America cannot be great. You are the support for the country and the reason I am able to write this letter right now. I am in eternal debt to you, as I will never be able to pay back what you have given me with your service.

After boot camp, waving goodbye to your family, spending months in foreign countries fighting not only for my freedom, but for your own life, and seeing things you wish you had never seen, you deserve the world and more. Your strength and courage speaks louder than any pen, and I wish I could write something somewhat comparable to the amazing things you do. I want to apologize for any person who doesn't give you or your family the respect you deserve. It's despicable that anyone could be anything but gratuitous towards you.

To the families of our troops:

You are just as brave as these men and women. Watching your husband or wife, son or daughter, mom or dad, or friend leave to fight for our country is absolutely heart-wrenching. Your strength is incredibly admirable. Your support for our troops is not only honorable, but without you, what would our soldiers be fighting for? Without your support, our troops would lose hope. Your support of our troops is direct support of our country and our freedom. Thank you for being strong.

I wish I could guarantee their safe return as much as you do. I pray that you will get to embrace them once again. I hope that the person you shipped off is the same one that returns. I hope you welcome them back with open arms and the same support you offered while they were away. You are a hero to me.

To the men and women who have lost their lives for our country:

Our county is indebted to you. You have built a foundation for us that is strong and safe. You have given everything you have to give for American and all of the people in it, and I strongly believe that is the most selfless thing a person could ever do. You have sacrificed yourself so that I have the right to share my thoughts, to walk down the street without fear, and to choose my own fate. Thank you for everything I have. I promise I will not forget what you have sacrificed to give me my life.

To America:

This Memorial Day, please take a moment to honor not only those who have lost their lives for this country, but the families who have lost their sons, daughters, moms, dads, and friends as well. Say thank you to the men and women who continue to put their lives on the line to defend your rights, your freedom, and your way of life. Always remember, freedom isn't free.

THANK YOU TROOPS

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
