An Open Letter To The Life I Am Living

Dear Life I’m Living,

This week, I decided to write you because some things have happened recently that made me step back and take a good look at my own life. I wrote down some things that have some sort of meaning in my life. They keep me going because sometimes life is hard, and the only thing you can do is be positive.

The first thing I want to talk about is how who you were in high school means nothing to who you are now. This is something people don’t realize until you actually “grow up.” No one cares if you were the homecoming queen or the captain of the football team. Those things are important at that time of your life, but once they hand you that diploma, none of that matters! That chapter of your life is closed, and you now have the chance to be a new person. Take it! Don’t let that chance slip away. College is your chance to become the person you have always wanted to be. I just wanted to thank you for helping become the person I wanted to be, and throwing the person I was in high school out the door.

Next, I just want to remind you to never care what people think. Be who you want to be. Don’t ever let people put you down for living the life you want to live, and as long as you love yourself, nothing else matters. To those people out there that make you feel bad, they can stop, because no one is perfect, so they can stop acting like they are!

To follow that up, you need to remember that before you can possibly love anyone else, you need to love yourself. That may not be today or anytime soon, and that is OK. If you are not completely happy and in love with the person you are, how can you think it's even possible to let someone else in? Love is something so special, but it requires two people that are completely in love with who they are to combine those two lives and make them one. So if you aren’t in love with yourself, change. You only live once, so you better make sure you do it right. And then, when you're ready to love someone else, you will know.

The last thing I want to emphasize to you is that life is too short. If I have learned one thing so far this summer. this is it. So take chances, because you never know if you will ever get those opportunities again. It may even surprise you what amazing things can come out of those opportunities. Life is too short to not eat ice cream every day and spend every minute being the best version of yourself you can be.

So, life, I know we have had our hardcore ups and downs, but I cannot thank you enough for the amazing experiences we have had so far. I cannot wait to see what you have in store for the future, but no matter what it is, I’ll always try to look at it with a positive attitude because, well, it could be worse.

Sincerely,

The girl who showed up

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
