An Open Letter To The High School Senior Who Got Accepted Into NC State

Well first off congratulations on getting into NC State! Our school is getting harder and harder to get into each year, so you should feel extremely proud of this accomplishment. Get ready to have the best time of your life because I know that it has been the best part of my life by far! There is so much to do and understand at NC State so to help you out I compiled this list of things you much know once getting accepted into NC State.

Bragaw is the best dorm and avoid the tri towers if possible

Room in wolf village

Bragaw has the c-store, bigger rooms, and a volleyball court. Plus some of the rooms have a homie look with brick walls which is way nicer than just white walls. However, they do not have an elevator so just be ready to climb some stairs (it is only 4 flights max don't worry).

The tri towers are to be avoided though because the rooms are tiny. When I say tiny I mean after being in a room at Bragaw or Lee you will wonder how you got stuck in a jail cell. The pros are that it is super close to Talley and most classes so you can come back and take a nap between classes like I did when I lived there. However, I also had several bug infestations including bed bugs, so I would highly recommend you stay away if possible.

Raleigh is amazing

State fair

Gabriella Barcinas

Raleigh has so many cool spots to eat and hang out at! There is the Raleigh garden which is free to go to just to look around or have a picnic, Crabtree mall is a couple exits down from campus, theres tons of great restaurants like Gonza's on Hillsborough, the farmer market, and so much more. Raleigh has everything from museums to clubs so be ready to always be busy! I always say that you should never have a dull moment. I mean it's ok to have a night in and rest but you should never be bored because there is just so much to do in Raleigh! Plus watch out for October because the fair will be right next to State so you have to go! And the Chinese lantern festival comes around in the winter time so be sure not to miss that too!

Case and the Atrium are great

Fries

In terms of dinning halls, Case has the best food by far but you can only eat lunch there unless you are an athlete. However you still have Clark and Fountain for dinner which are usually gross but they recently have really update Fountain and it has a lot of better options. It has a full salad bar, pasta bar, burger area, rice set up, and so much more every night!

As for everything else, the Atrium is the best because it has Chick-fil-A, just be ready to wait in a long line if you go at prime lunch time or when lot's of classes get out because getting your food and a seat will be hard (especially if it is raining). Tuffy's in Talley is not too bad but you can get sick of it easily, just like Los Lobos. Jasons Deli is good but takes forever and One Earth is really great if you like Asian!

Make sure to utilize Grub Hub so you can just pick up your order ready to go!

The best places to legally drink are pretty much any club or bar

Ugly Monkey Bar

Gabriella Barcinas

I turned 21 in quarantine so I can't say much about this but I do know that there are tons of great bars and clubs for 21+ to get a good drink and a good time! Raleigh is full of places so you won't have to look far.

This place in the picture is called the Ugly Monkey and it is super cool inside! I was able to go inside for a date function.

Football games are a must

I'll be honest I hate football but attending the games is still a must! Basically everyone from the school attends and it is something you have to experience. There is such a sense of community you feel with everyone cheering and singing together. Plus the tailgates are also fun!

Pack cloths for everything

Snow in January

Gabriella Barcinas

North Carolina can go from snowing to 90 degrees in a day so make sure to always have cloths for every single season. Packing will pretty much be like this: I will need bathing suits probably, shorts, jeans, oh and my winter boots.

If you get a fist bump in Fountain feel special

There is a lady who works there who gives fist bumps out and she is super kind, which attests to the kindness of many of the people who work at State. The fist bumps make many people's days and everyone knows about them.

Good luck!

NC State ring ceramony

Gabriella Barcinas

Good luck! These next 4 years will have some hard moments with things like exams but it will have so many awesome ones too. Put yourself out there and always be ready to do something new! NC State is my home and now it is yours too. Go Pack!

The Daily Struggles of Being a College Commuter

It's not all morning coffees and singing along to the radio.

The Daily Struggles of Being a College Commuter

I've been in college for four years now. I spent half my time as a commuter and half as a resident so I've experienced both sides of the housing spectrum. One thing I've learned comparing the two is that my struggles as a commuter far outweigh anything I went through while living on campus. Commuters have to deal with the problems school brings along with a slew of other issues; I've filled up my gas tank in the worst kind of weather conditions and napped in random places in public more times than I'm proud to say of. This is a list of some of the most challenging aspects of being a commuter.

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!
