An Open Letter to the High School Senior Itching to Graduate

Time seems like it isn't going fast enough, but before you know it, you'll be throwing up your caps and losing your tassels.

You finally picked out your prom dress and senior trip is all paid off. Graduation is so close you can taste it. College isn’t that far away anymore. Your family is already talking about how much they’ll miss you when you leave home. Are you a little sad? Yes, but you’re feeling too many other emotions.

With your college acceptance out of the way, all of your classes seem meaningless. You've already got accepted, so what's the point? It's going to seem like there isn't a point, but if you keep your GPA as high as it can be, you'll earn (or keep!) those useful scholarships. Your future debt-free self will thank you - trust me.

Spend as much time as you can with your friends whatever chance you get. Because honestly, most of your friendships won't ever be the same. Don't get me wrong, there are some friendships that will go on just as they did before, but some will be different. Distance, new friends, and busy class schedules seem to wedge themselves between you and your friends until you become strangers. It's a scary and crazy thought, but when you get to this point, you'll see what I mean. So cherish your friendships and put effort into them now - it's more important than ever.

Tell the people close to you how much they mean to you. Whether it's teachers, parents, grandparents, best friends, boyfriends/girlfriends, let them know how much of an impact they've made on your life. They're so proud of you for who you've come to be, so acknowledge them for having a special part in molding you into who you are today. They'll appreciate it more than you know.

Enjoy the wonderful food that you have easy-access to. In college, you aren't going to have the luxury of your mom's dinners, your hometown diner (those from NJ know how important they are), or your grandmother's comfort foods. Soon you'll have to walk across campus to grab a snack instead of a couple feet away to your kitchen. Eat up while you can.

Above all else, you need to realize that at this moment in time - you are infinite.

I hadn't realized this until I was reflecting on senior year after a long tiring day of classes. Us college kids find ourselves doing this a lot because we realize how much we took for granted. You see all the tweets about missing high school and you think we're nuts, but just you wait - soon you'll be retweeting those tweets just like all of us.

Many think a lot about their senior year because classes were easier and we weren't as stressed (it gets worse?! yes. it does.), but I miss senior year because I felt limitless. There are so many doors to be opened that lie ahead of you. Each choice will lead you to a different destiny. You can go to college across the country and flee your hometown, you can go a reasonable distance while still fleeing your hometown (always having the comfort of home), you can take a year off and travel the world, you can go to beauty school, you can start working right away, or you can get married. The list will continue to go on.

This is your senior year - what you've been waiting for, for what feels like forever. You're on top of the world and the sky is the limit. You can do anything you set your mind to. To any college kids reading this, do you remember this feeling?

Cherish this feeling.

Do whatever you want to do because your future is in your hands alone. Because once you get into college, that feeling dwindles. While you still have it deep inside, you're too preoccupied with the fleeting time you have before being thrown into the real world and student loans will become a reality.

Yes, us college kids are more than happy to be out of high school - elated even. We can make our own class schedules and walk out of class whenever we have to go to the bathroom (trust me, it's a weird feeling the first few weeks). It's great. You'll love it more than you think you will.

Before you know it, you'll already be moved into your dorm putting up pictures of graduation on your wall. Time will fly by faster than you even want it to, so take advantage of each precious moment you have.

One last thing, make sure you take your tassel off before you throw it. Don't be a know-it-all and leave it on... or else you'll lose it in the grass.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
