Dear friend,

Let’s start off by saying you are beautiful. You are extremely talented, kind, smart, loving, you are just extraordinary. You are this fantastic human being who is doing amazing things and who’s life is just going to get better with age. You make me, along with many others, crack up when you laugh, smile when you smile, and cry when you’re sad. You have this huge impact on the world because you are just that awesome. Do you not see how amazing you are?

Now just because I said this and all of it is true does not mean you should go off and get a big head. Don’t ever think you are better than anyone because you are not. Don’t get too big for your britches, don’t brag, and don’t turn you back on the people that got you where you are today. Remember who you are, always and constantly, and be thankful for all the love in your life. When you inevitable have the chance to be mean, don’t take it. Don’t give into temptation. Don’t laugh or judge people. You don’t know each battle they go through daily. Remember all of the struggles that you have gone through and make sure to be sympathetic. Love always and be polite, because you of all people know that you get a lot more from honey than you do with vinegar.

So, what’s the point of this letter? Basically to pick you up when you are down. Because you know that is my job and I will be there. I will always be here for you as your friend to try and lead you in the right direction and make your life happier. No matter how old or how far, you always have me on your side. No matter if harsh words are exchanged, you know I don’t mean it. I love you no matter what and am so proud of everything you do.

My advice to you? Get ride of the toxins in your life. Stop the addictions. No, I don’t mean drugs and alcohol. I mean stop going back to that one horrible habit, stop letting it influence your life, stop letting it drag you down. At this point in the letter you are probably saying, “Oh no, here we go again,” but you know I’m right. I am the one who listens to you after all. I am the one who sees and hears all the negatives when you complain and fight. I know it all and most importantly I know you, whether you like to admit it or not. You know it’s bad for you, that you are better than that, you know you are hurting the ones you love because of it, and that it is just a phase and needs to go now. So, please, for the love of everything, GET RID OF IT.

So, again, throw out all the negativity. Be you. Only care about you if you have to for a moment. Love you. Know how awesome you are without putting that nose in the air. Because, dear friend, I want you to go so far in life. I envy you for yourself confidence and personality, but I want you to get everything you can out of life. I want you to be happy forever, not just in the moment. I want you to laugh hard, love lots, be kind, and shine bright. And I will help you accomplish that in every way I can. Because I love you lots.

Sincerely,

You know who. xo.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
