An Open Letter To The Friends I Have Made In College

To the friends I have made in college...

Thank you for the late night Sheetz/Cookout/Mr.Goodies runs.

Thank you for procrastinating with me despite the 10 page paper that is due in a week that neither of us have started on.

Thank you for coming over to binge watch Netflix or fall into the Youtube wormhole.

Thank you for letting me crash on your floors/bed for movie night.

Thank you for coaxing me into going with you out into town.

Thank you for picking me up when I have fallen down (literally and figuratively).

Thank you for helping me with my homework when I feel like all hope is lost.

Thank you for the crazy weekend nights and also the chill ones.

Thank you for yelling at me when I'm acting crazy and/or stupid and/or irrational.

Thank you for yelling out to me when you see me on campus

Thank you for sending me the most basic and the most embarrassing Snapchats.

Thank you for lending me your ear to talk about my lame problems.

Thank you for letting me cry about the heartbreaking news I've received.

Thank you for reminding me that each day gets better.

Thank you for placing smiles on my face despite how miserable my days have been.

Thank you for loving me despite my sarcasm and attitude.

Thank you for loving me even when I'm in a mood and being a jerk.

Thank you for being you.

Thank you to the friends who know all my secrets and keep them, and thank you to the friends I barely know but still say "Hi" to me.

College, for me, has to be one of the most stressful things that I have ever attempted in my life. Between my classes, homework, and jobs, you guys are the only way I say sane. In high school I was very much excluded to just myself and one or two other friends, but now I have an abundant amount. I never thought it was possible to care for so many people and want them in my life. Having all of you in my life has improved my life tremendously: I know I have people that I can go to, that care for me, that want to spend time with me and make memories.

The memories I have made with you, my friends, I would never trade. You guys have made the transition into college bearable and fun. I wouldn't trade any of you for the world. Growing up, we (as a society) all heard that high school was supposed to be the time of our lives...but high school doesn't hold a candle to college. My experiences in college, in my first year alone, surpass all of the memories I had in high school. Because of you, my greatest and closest friends, I will look back at college and smile. Because of you guys, I have found who I am and who I am meant to be.

I love you guys.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
