An Open Letter To The College Student Who Doesn’t Get Out Of Bed

I woke up after 10 am for a week, and then before 8 am for a week.

While at college, time management is a huge part of your life. What time you get up, when you start your homework, what time you eat meals are all decisions that you have to make as a student and person.

For roughly about a week I decided to wake up after 10 AM (except for the two days when I have class at 9:30) and to see what would happen to my eating schedule, my academics, and my mental health state. And well, let me tell you. It did not go very well. Because I was waking up so late, I would stay up until roughly 1-2 AM watching movies or playing games with my friends. When I would wake up the next morning, I was completely exhausted. My thought processing and mental state were not functioning at any capacity. I was completely unmotivated to start my homework. I had an insane amount of trouble getting myself out of bed and prepared for the day. My eating habits were insanely bad. I would forget to drink water and eat regularly. I would get headaches every day, and would eat breakfast until 11 AM. Then I wouldn't eat lunch until 2, and dinner at 7-8 ish. I struggled in my academics, I wasn't motivated to get my school work done. Needless to say, my grades have now dropped.

The week following that week, I got up continually before 8 AM. I would eat a usually healthy breakfast, and then start my homework within a reasonable amount of time. I could process new information, and could actually function better. I was understanding the content in my classes more than I did the previous week. I was going to bed around 10:30/11:30 and waking up between 7:30-8:15. Throughout the week, I was able to get up as early, if not earlier, than the day before. It got easier and easier throughout the week. My grades across the board went up by a substantial amount. Instead of studying in my bed, or even in my room, I ventured out onto campus and found my favorite study spots. These places helped me to study more effectively and to get out of my building. Sitting outside when it's nice out is my favorite way to do my homework.

In conclusion, in college time management is crucial to your success. For me, that includes waking up earlier, treating my body correctly, and getting out of my room. Some of my favorite study spots are located around the library and the student union. Finding ways to manage your time in the best way for you is the key to success in college.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
