An Open Letter To The American Public
Lauren Gregory Design

Dear American Public,

I am not writing to make a comment on the political system nor condemn the nominees nor criticize our democracy. I am not writing to say which candidate is better suited to be president nor am I commenting on the character of either candidate. However, I am here to criticize how we are acting as Americans. We have forgotten how to accept one another as human beings refusing to demonstrate the universal rights of respect and dignity. We have let hate seep into every pore of American society and created that the only ideology is our own. This a dangerous ideology to follow. By following this, you turn your back on the founding principles in which the United States was built upon. What makes us special, we are destroying.

Our country is greatly injured. Hate has scarred our country as our brothers and sisters under democracy have turned against each other. Our ears have closed to the opposing argument and our eyes shut to struggles of fellow man. Our minds have forgotten to love and our hands engage in acts of hate against each other. Our voices are no longer voices of reason, but voices of hate. Our society has become a mob. However, above all, our hearts have forgotten sympathy for fellow men and women.

Our country is unique in that our Constitution protects our freedom to think. The government does not tell the American public what to believe, say, or believe. This encourages free thinking by allowing our own logic and experience to determine our own outlook on life instead of a cookie cutter ideology enforced by the government. Since everyone’s life experiences and outlooks are different, ideologies will vary. We must accept that and open our ears, arms, heart, and mind to each other.

Our country is broken and the only people to blame are ourselves. We have allowed political parties to classify citizens instead of the virtues and vices of each person. No longer are we using character as a measuring stick, but whether if you are a democrat or republican. Republicans are called bigoted, sexist, and an extremist. Democrats are called an elitist and a crook. These slurs simply are not true. Some of the best people I have met are Trump supporters and others Hillary supporters. If we would all just take a moment to find the similarities we share with each other, we would realize that we have more in common than what separates us.

Overall, I am ashamed of how the American public has treated each other. We have forgotten that the people we slander and abuse are members of our society. We have let our own prejudice and ideologies close our minds to opposing views. We have come too far as a society to let hate tear us apart. Do not be a part of the problem that tears our country apart, be a part of the solution, the voice that brings our country together.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
