An Open Letter To A Soulmate

I haven't met you yet, but I miss you.

Dear soulmate,

I doubt that I’ve had the pleasure of meeting you, but I miss you. We may have obliviously strolled by one another at a busy crosswalk, or accidentally bumped shoulders at a music show, but I still don’t believe I’m aware of your name. I’m jealous of those who are gifted with your presence and time while I’m away because I’m certain there will never be enough of it for us.

There is a Greek myth that tells the first humans were ruled by the god Zeus and born with a duplicate set of arms, legs, and eyes along with two noses and mouths. Zeus was intimidated by the power these people held and thought they had the potential to overthrow him. To prevent this, Zeus cut the creatures in half and forced the split bodies to wander around the mortal world in search of their other piece--their soulmate. I’d imagine that my opinion doesn’t mean much to the Greek gods, but I think Zeus was off in his portrayal of soulmates.

When we meet each other, I hope we are already whole within ourselves. I don’t want to seek fulfillment of myself in you, nor do I want you to try to find completion of yourself in me. I won’t try to change you and I’m not going to save you. Both of us should be full of who we are so that when we come together, we unite because of our differences and complement the other. Just like yin and yang, our souls should balance out.

I hope we don’t agree on too many things, because I want you to challenge my thoughts. I want your mind to inspire me to grow and bloom just as I’ll try my best to equally return the favor. Be my muse. Describe memories from when you were younger and share the demons living in your head with me. I’ll listen to every word of your velvet voice as it escapes your mouth. Tell me what keeps you from sleeping at night and what makes you look forward to waking up in the morning. I’ll watch your eyes turn to saucers when you tell me about your passions and dreams. I’ll ensure that you never lose sight of them and stand by you with whatever it is you wish to accomplish. Let’s venture to faraway places of this world together, to the uncharted places of our minds.

I’d be taking you for granted if I simply accepted you as you are, because you are so much more. Every corner of your being is a breath of oxygen after emerging from the bottom of a swimming pool, a hot cup of coffee on Sunday morning, a long drive daydreaming out the window. There might be times when we’re afraid to see the value of our bank accounts, but your value as a human will never waver for me. There will be days when we don’t speak, but our love will be the loudest force to be reckoned with that we know. Take my soul in exchange for yours and I will love it with my whole being, forever and unconditionally.

Love,

Your soulmate

10 Thoughts Of A 5th Year Senior

What about those of us who don't do it all in four years?

"College will be the best four years of your life" is a phrase that we have all heard growing up. College is painted as a magical place to us while we are in high school. A place you go to learn, meet your best friends and probably have the time of your life while all of this is going down. Four whirlwind years, where everything that you've known changes and you start to learn what it means to live on your own, have a job, etc. But what about those of us who don't do this all in four years? Major changes, hard courses, switching schools, career paths changing, these are just a handful of factors that could extend your four years to five, six or seven. There is nothing wrong with taking extra time to graduate, but returning as a fifth-year is a little different. Most of your best friends have most likely graduated and moved and while you may be one of the oldest undergraduates on campus, you might feel as awkward as a freshmen. A world that became home and comfortable to you is still there but it's slightly different than you've known it to be and you have to find a groove to fall into. These are thoughts you'll have as you look ahead to returning to your college campus, with a victory lap planned.

11 Times Aubrey Plaza Described Sophomore Year

"I don't want to do things. I want to do not things."

Aubrey Plaza is one of my favorite humans in Hollywood. She's honest, blunt, unapologetic, and hilarious. I just started my sophomore year of college, and found that some of her best moments can accurately describe the start of the school year.

1. When your advisor tells you that you should declare a major soon.

2. Seeing the lost and confused freshmen and remembering that was you a short year ago, and now being grateful you know the ins and outs of the campus.

3. Going to the involvement fair to sign up for more clubs knowing that you are already too involved.

4. When you actually do the reading required for the first class.

5. Seeing your friends for the first time since last semester.

6. When you're already drowning in homework during syllabus week.

7. Realizing you don't have the same excitement for classes as you did as a freshman.

8. Going home and seeing people from high school gets weirder the older you get.
