An Open Letter to Seniors In High School About College Acceptances

"You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself in any direction you choose. You're on your own. And you know what you know. You are the guy who'll decide where to go" -Dr. Seuss

Dear Seniors in High School,

There is only so much time left in your high school career and you need to make sure you live every minute like it means the world to you. That was something I wish I had known from the very beginning. The hours you spend crying because of petty drama, and stupid boys that become irrelevant in the near future, are not worth your effort. This is your time to be happy where you are, with the people you have known for years, in the place you feel the most comfortable.

When it became January of my senior year of high school I began to doubt all of my choices of where I wanted to go to college, what I wanted to become when I was older and why I was not “good enough” as the student I was. The thought of doing early decision for a school I liked was running through my head because I wish I already knew where I would be going, but yet, at some point I thought early action would be the best shot for me.

Waiting until the end of January to hear back from the school of my dreams was eating me alive, especially because I had heard multiple times that it was not likely I would be accepted. The time had rolled around and luckily, I was accepted, defying most odds due to the learning disability I had grown up with. It certainly was not easy, but the one thing I would have changed was all the stress I put on my own shoulders.

Of course your parents, siblings, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and everyone you may have ever known are expecting the best of you, but only you will really understand if you belong to that school. The motto I have stood by my whole life is that “everything happens for a reason” and if you do not get into the school of your dreams it is okay because, in many cases, you will end up at the school that was truly perfect for you.

Although the wait feels like it is never going to end, do not give up. Smile more and give yourself more time to relax. The waiting period seems forever, but if you are having fun it will go by so much faster. Learn to live a little, and before you know it, you will be having the best time of your life at the perfect school for you.

Sincerely,

An unsure Senior who became an extremely happy Freshman

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
