Dear People,
Just stop. Do you know how many people post open letters to their best friends? Their grandmas? The plumber who helped unclog their toilets?
No one cares. We all have best friends. We all have / had grandmothers. You are no different!
I know what you're thinking. I'm being sassy, right? Well, it's not sass. It's the truth and the truth can set you free. Whatever open letter you're writing for your article due this week, rip it up and burn it. I understand you miss your best friend and I understand 5SOS has saved you. But no one needs to know that. There are so many different things to talk about. Stop talking about yourself.
I've noticed an interesting trend in youth these days. Way back when, there used to be problems with kids having self-esteem issues and feelings of inferiority when comparing themselves to peers. You had to worry about bullying and having people pick on you.
Now, it's the exact opposite. People can't get enough of themselves. Selfies here, selfies there. One leg on the bathroom sink with a peace sign. "I look so bad in this picture," as you post the picture on Instagram. Now everyone has an inflamed sense of worth. There's a line between confidence and narcissism, and you just passed it writing this open letter. Yes, I know every girl in your sorority will share your open letter, giving you the most shares this week. Is it fair to you? Yes. Is it fair to everyone else? Let me tell you this. No one wants to read your crap.
Now, I know no one wants to read my crap either. Whenever you see trash, you throw it away. That's probably what you do when you see my articles pop up on your feed.
But, I do have a point here. Writing open letters to a friend or family member is not original. We're trying to attract people to read our articles, not have them run away screaming. Who in their right mind would want to read a letter to someone's best friend for fun? Is that supposed to be cute?
There's a time and place for everything, and your open letter to a friend is not for Saturday at 11:59 p.m. It's easier to swallow a "listicle" compared to that trash. I mean, maybe some of them are heartfelt, but I came here to party. So, instead of waiting the last minute and doing what everyone else is doing, take a second to brainstorm and talk about something interesting.
I didn't do that, but maybe you can.
Bye.
P.S. I really need a new open letter article idea. I miss my best friend too!
