An Open Letter To My Little Sister

Even though I might not say it often, I love you with all my heart.

An Open Letter To My Little Sister

To my almost 10-year-old little sister,

As your birthday is approaching and looking back on all of our memories, there are a few things I would like you to know.

I want you to know I have and always will be here for you, from the day you were born to the present and everything in between. You can tell me anything and everything. When you get your first boyfriend, you better tell me all about him! When something is bothering you or you might be mad at me, tell me, so we can work it out.

I want you to know I am always down for you to paint my nails, play Heads Up, take you out to our favorite sushi place (even though we don't even eat sushi) or to just take you to the park. I love spending time with you.

I want you to know I admire your artistic ability. You continuously amaze me with all of your different abilities from drawing and painting to your written pieces like stories and poems. I'm glad you are able to express your feelings in this way.

I want you to know I have never had a doubt in my mind that you are smart, beautiful, kind and funny, a young woman full of personality. You are so special, and there is only one of you. You are always making me laugh, especially with our inside jokes and your impressions of your favorite Youtuber, Miranda Sings.

I want you to know that you shouldn't listen to the bullies or mean things kids may say to you at school. I know it's hard to forget what they say, but you are better than the bullies, and you deserve to be happy!

I want you to know that even when I'm an hour away at college, I will still be there for you, whether that to be just to talk, help you with your homework, whatever it may be. I'm just a phone call or text message away. I want you to know that when it's your turn to go off to college, and we go our separate ways, don't be sad! We will always keep in contact, and we can see each other on weekends and during breaks.

I want you to know I am extremely proud of you. You work hard every day in school, improving your skills. You continue to work hard and impress me. I know your asthma and anxiety may get the best of you sometimes, but you never give up, you don't let it defeat you. You push right through the difficult times, and for that, you are brave and inspirational.

I want you to know I hope I am a role model for you. I try hard to do the right thing and set the best example. I want you to look up to me as someone you can count on, and I hope I haven't failed you, yet.

I want you to know I will be here for every step of the way, the good times and the bad times. Your future breakups, your graduation, prom, when you go to college, I am here to support you and all of your decisions.

Most importantly, I want you to know that even though I might not say it often, I love you with all my heart.

Love always,

Your big sister, Elaina

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
