An Open Letter to my Stepparents

If you're like many of the kids of our generation, there's a good chance you have stepparents. Divorce between your parents is a tough situation. It's often fast & if you're really lucky, like me, you would have been too young to know what was even going on.

So your parents decided enough was enough, they moved on & they found other people to spend their life with, people who make them happy. However, now they have to make sure that this person is good enough to meet you, their baby. They have to decide how to go about you meeting each other. They decided that this person was good enough, they are able and worthy of meeting you. This person, man or woman, is amazing, they come into your life, they want to know you, to care for you, to love you & support you. This is exactly what they do.

My stepparents are more than just amazing & I feel that I don't thank them enough for all that they have done for me. I hear people all the time complain about their stepparents & it breaks my heart because these people have made such an effort to be your parent when they certainly don't have to. They chose your parent & they also chose you. They took on the role of being a parent, your parent, overnight, practically.

Thank your stepparents. Tell them you love them.

I want to thank my stepparents from the bottom of my heart to treating me just as they treat their own kids. I want to thank them for taking me in with such open arms, for being so incredibly good to me. I have known my stepmom and my stepdad for the majority of my life. They have given me such love, support & care.

If you have a stepparent, that you love & are thankful for, tell them. If it hurts you to hear people say bad things about their stepparents, make sure to treat yours right. I wouldn't be the person I am today if it wasn't for them. I am so lucky & blessed to have such a strong support system. I am so proud to have the parents that I have, 4 parents, 2 sets of them, double the love.

So thank you, thank you for helping me, thank you for co-parenting with my parents, thank you for all getting along for my sake, thank you for loving me as your own. For being so selfless, for doing everything you possibly could for me. For comforting me, for all the advice that you have given me my whole life. For taking care of me when I'm down, or for fixing my car over & over again. Thank you for every little thing that you have done for me, nothing goes unnoticed.

I am so grateful for you two & I love you both.

Being a part of any organization undoubtedly comes with the pitfalls of being grouped into negative stereotypes, and sororities are certainly no exception. Here are the top few things, that I find at least, are some of the most irritating misconceptions that find their way into numerous conversations...

8. "The whole philanthropy thing isn't real, right?"

Well all those fundraisers and marketing should would be a waste then wouldn't they?

11 Things Summer Nannies Can Relate To

There are plenty of obstacles that come when taking care of kids, but it's a very rewarding experience.

As a college student, being a nanny over the summer is both enjoyable and challenging. Underneath the seemingly perfect trips to the pool or countless hours spent playing Monopoly are the obstacles that only nannies will understand. Trading in your valuable summer vacation in return for three months spent with a few children less than half your age may seem unappealing, but so many moments make it rewarding. For my fellow summer nannies out there, I know you can relate.

There are a lot of really easy, common names in the U.S. and while many of those simple names have different spellings, most of the time, pronunciation is not an issue that those people need to worry about. However, others are not as fortunate and often times give up on corrections after a while. We usually give an A+ for effort. So, as you could probably imagine, there are a few struggles with having a name that isn’t technically English. Here are just a few…

Daydreams, the savior of our life in class. Every type of student in the classroom does it at least once, but most cases it is an everyday event, especially in that boring class -- you know the one. But what are we thinking while we are daydreaming?

Puerto Ricans. They are very proud people and whether they were born on the island or born in the United States by Puerto Rican parent(s). It gets even better when they meet another fellow Puerto Rican or Latino in general. You’ll know quickly if they are Puerto Rican whether the flag is printed somewhere on their person or whether they tell you or whether the famous phrase “wepa!” is said.
