An Open Letter To My Soccer Dad

You never missed a game and I never thanked you enough.

An Open Letter To My Soccer Dad

Dear Dad,

I do not know where I would be without you, although I know that being a college athlete would be out of the picture.

First I want to say that I am sorry. Sorry for not enjoying ballet. Sorry for putting so many miles on our now old minivan. Sorry for the birthdays you had to spend watching me play soccer. Sorry for the money I made you spend on uniforms and cleats. Sorry for all of the stinky drives home from my games and practice. I just want to let you know that it wasn’t all for nothing.

With that said, now I want to thank you. Thank you for signing me up for AYSO when you did. Who would have thought that my chubby little self would actually be able to run up and down the field for fun. I will never forget the post game goodie bags and halftime oranges, I actually miss them sometimes.

Thank you for seeing potential in me and convincing me to take it to the next level, club soccer. The sisters that I have made during my club years are irreplaceable and the lessons that I have learned are so valuable. I learned that there are always going to be people out there who care for me. I have learned that winning is not always the most important thing as long as I was improving as a player. I have learned how to handle criticism and I now understand that you have to give people the respect that they deserve.

Thank you for driving me to every game whether it was 5 minutes away for 5 hours away. I have visited places that I would have never visited if it wasn’t for soccer. I memorized the routes to our usual game locations and felt like a boss when I would share the directions with others.

Thank you for all of my post game lectures. You never let me quit when I was at my breaking point and instead gave me the life lesson that quitting is not the answer. You made sure that I knew when I had a bad game, and you always gave me something to work on for my next game. You reminded me that I am blessed to have the opportunity to play because many do not.

Thank you for encouraging me to continue playing soccer in college. I thought that I was done with soccer after high school but you pushed me to continue playing at the next level. You pushed me to get recruited and playing soccer in college is honestly one of the best experiences of my life, so I thank you.

Thank you for not just being a dad, but being my soccer dad. I am the player that I am today because of you. Thank you for always believing in me and I hope I have made you proud.

Love,
Your Little Soccer Star

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
