It's hard to believe that you're 16 years old. It seems like only yesterday you were in kindergarten and I was your bossy big sister. It feels like time has gone by so quickly and only recently I've become a better big sister for you. I know once you read this you'll protest, but I feel like it's true. Before I went to school, we got along, but we lacked a strong relationship where you felt like you could come to me for anything. Now that I'm away all the time, our relationship is stronger and more real.

You're sixteen now. Which means you can drive legally by yourself (once you get your license) and that you've hit sweet sixteen. I knew this day would come, but I never imagined it would be so soon. You have grown into a beautiful young lady that inspires me to be and do better every day. Without you, I'm not sure who I would be. You're my little sister and I couldn't be prouder of you.

Now, because you're sixteen now, you're reaching a point in your life where you'll start to make your own decisions and become who you were meant to be. It might get hard, but you're tougher than you look. You have a lot of very important decisions in your future, but I know that you'll do what is best for you. Friends will come and go, but I will always be by your side. Life with throw you some curve balls that you won't see coming, but as long as you grip the bat tighter and never take your eye off the ball, you'll hit a home run; I'll be in the stands cheering for you. There will be days where you feel like everything is falling apart or your life is in shambles, but you will rise. Sometimes when life is pulling you backwards, dragging you in the direction you don't want to go, it is really pulling you back so you can shoot forwards.

I just want you to know that I will always be here for you.

No matter the day. No matter the time. I don't care if we're hundreds of miles apart, I will always be there for you. I will always be your sister and I will always have you back. We're in this together, and I'm blessed to have you by my side. Ohana means family, and family means no one gets left behind, or forgotten. You're my family, my ohana.

I know we don't have the chance to spend much time together these days because I'm away at school, but I know we're growing closer. It's because we don't get to see each other or talk everyday. We cherish the moments we do have together and make the most of it. Before we both know it, I'll be done with school and you'll be just starting. I can only pray we find time to spend together. I can't imagine not having you in my life.

You're sixteen now and you have a lot of life ahead of you. Just know that I will be there for you to celebrate all the good and to be by your side through all the bad.

We're sisters and I love you. Until the end of time.

Love,

Your big sister

P.S. Happy Birthday.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
