An Open Letter To My Second Thoughts

You shall control me no longer

To the second thoughts that limit me in so many ways,

You have altered my life and my choices in more ways than you can imagine.

The mind is such a complex entity. The mind is so grand and can bring you to so many different places. Unfortunately, as sweet and fun as some of your thoughts might be, some will be just as scary and gruesome.

You are the reason why I, along with so many people, keep themselves from going out and taking risks. You act as a defense mechanism in any situation where our limits and our comfort levels might be tested. You are pretty much the reason why I have yet to do so many exhilarating things. Comfort is something that everyone likes, but at the same time, testing your limits is something that is important as well. You only live one life, so why not be a little risky? But it is because of you and the toll you put on me that I suppress these unconscious desires to do certain things and maintain a level of comfort instead.

You are the reason why I constantly reconsider and worry about the friendships, connections and relationships I have in my life. Did they not see my text, or did they see it hours ago and just decide to ignore it? Did they not say hi to me when I saw them because they were mad at me, or did they not see me? Did they avoid making plans with me because they are busy, or because they just don't care enough to set aside time for me? These, among with many other heart-aching questions, are all caused by this great but devilish mind of mine.

You are the reason why I, along with most of the rest of our world, cannot feel 100% comfortable in their own skin. You inflict us with inner demons that convince us to believe these false truths. You tell us we aren't good enough. You try to convince us that we are less than what we actually are. Whether it be our weight, height, skin tone, smile, eyes, freckles, hair, or any other minute characteristic, both physical and internal, we deserve the right to feel comfortable with who we are. But you are the sole reason as to why most people wake up and aren't happy with the person that they wake up to seeing.

It is time to defeat you. It is time to acknowledge and move past you. It is time to pick love over hate, peace over war, and confidence over insecurity.

It's time to make a change.

Sincerely,

Someone making an effort to forget you.

As college students, we are all familiar with the horror show that is course registration week. Whether you are an incoming freshman or selecting classes for your last semester, I am certain that you can relate to how traumatic this can be.

1. When course schedules are released and you have a conflict between two required classes.

Bonus points if it is more than two.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
