An Open Letter to My Dad

Thank you for being my number one day in and day out.

An Open Letter to My Dad
Kelly Colton

To the most important man in my life, I don't know what I would do without you. You've been my best friend since day one and I truly believe that a father is said to fall in love all over again the day that his little girl is born. You have been the greatest influence in my life and I can't imagine ever having a different father.

Although I might not always want to hear it right away, your honestly has helped to form me into a strong, independent and brutally honest young woman. Due to the way that you carry yourself, I believe honesty is one of the most important traits to have because I grew up being told the truth regardless of how blunt or bold it was.

Thank you for introducing me to athletics at such a young age and making sure I was the best athlete I could have possibly been. You never missed a game and I couldn't have been more grateful to look out into the stands and see my greatest supporter every game. The pre-game talks to help me get pumped before games to the yelling matches after that were all my fault but you still joined in because I thought I had played a horrible game. Whether I played the worst game of my life or the best game ever, you were always there to tell me what I needed to work on and to just focus on the next game.

Another thank you for introducing me to my favorite sports teams and watching them play with me when I'm able to be home. Being able to watch sports with you has turned into my favorite time spent with you.

You taught me how to hold my own and how to show respect in a society that doesn't always understand the meaning of that word. You helped turn your children into very respectful young adults and that has taken us a very long way. The path you have guided us to and have allowed us to make our own shows how much pride you take in having us as your children. Knowing that I make you proud and have turned out the way you wanted me to is something so rewarding in itself.

It's an understatement to say that I am a daddy's girl because since the day I could walk I haven't left your side. I know you worry about me all the time given you call me almost everyday just to talk for no reason and to see how my day went. It definitely doesn't go unappreciated and you always know how to make any bad day better.

Your endless support and love has gotten me through some of the tougher tines in my life so far and I couldn't imagine not having you and mom as my parents. You both truly know what's best for me and even though I might not think so at the time, you're always right.

Anyone can be a father, but it takes someone extremely special to be a dad. Thank you for being my dad, daddy.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
