An Open Letter To My Nostalgia Through Music

Why I could never live without music.

An Open Letter To My Nostalgia Through Music

To those who experience nostalgia through music,

Remember when you went to your first high school dance? Had your first kiss? Had one of the most memorable vacations of your life? I can thank music for the memories I've made through my short 18 years on this earth. I still have so many memories to make, people to meet, places to see. But yet, I can't help but find myself reliving my own life through powerful lyrics. I find myself having complete nostalgia for the days I took for granted, which ended up being some of the best and worst years of my life.

Music recreates your most valuable memories.

Although the feeling is quite hard to grasp or explain, there's something about music that brings you back to those exact moments in your life. It's funny how I can associate certain lyrics with certain days, bringing back every feeling, every conversation had during the short three minute durations of each song.

"Funny how a melody, sounds like a memory" - Eric Church

I couldn't have said it better myself. It's funny how Best I Ever Had by Gavin DeGraw brings me back to college visits, a post childhood trip back to the happiest place on earth, and the final days of my High School career. You're ready to be independent. Your parents have taught you all there is to possibly know about life away from home. But sometimes, you need good memories to look back on. I'm quickly reminded by music just how good we have it back home.

Music reminds me of what love feels like.

Everyone has that special song or album they share with their significant other. It feels good to reminisce on the first dates, the meeting of the parents, the first road trip. Having small arguments of who has control over the aux cord. I couldn't be more thankful for the memories we've made and the songs we've shared along the way.

Music reminds you to reflect on your life.

Sometimes we just need to take a minute or two to ourselves and reflect on the good in our lives rather then the bad. We're all guilty of wanting to hide out in our room and lose ourselves in the music. And theres absolutely nothing wrong with that. Sometimes you even feel like the lyrics were written for you. If one things for sure, Taylor Swift has gotten me through some pretty dark days. Problems seem to fall away when I put in my headphones, take a deep breath, and just relax.

Music is like a picture, the memories stay the same, even if everyone goes their separate ways.

I am forever grateful for my high school friends. I've shared countless memories and car ride jam sessions to last a lifetime. Thank you for being my muse all these years. Although things are a lot different now, Country Girl Shake it For Me and the Pitch Perfect Soundtrack will always have a place in my heart.

For good or for bad, happy or sad, music floods my mind with memories and I couldn't imagine living my life any different that I have. A life without music is a life wasted.

Sincerely,

A very blessed and nostalgic college freshman

27 Things 'The Office' Has Taught Us

"The Office" is a mockumentary based on everyday office life featuring love triangles, silly pranks and everything in between. It can get pretty crazy for just an average day at the office.

When you were little, your parents probably told you television makes your brain rot so you wouldn't watch it for twelve straight hours. However, I feel we can learn some pretty valuable stuff from television shows. "The Office," while a comedy, has some pretty teachable moments thrown in there. You may not know how to react in a situation where a co-worker does something crazy (like put your office supplies in jello) but thanks to "The Office," now you'll have an idea how to behave ifsomething like that should happen.

Here are just a few of the things that religious Office watchers can expect to learn.

High School And College Sucked All Of The Fun Out Of Reading

Books were always about understanding for me, about learning the way someone else sees, about connection.

High School And College Sucked All Of The Fun Out Of Reading

I keep making this joke whenever the idea of books is brought up: "God, I wish I knew how to read." It runs parallel to another stupid phrase, as I watch my friends struggle through their calculus classes late at night in our floor lounge: "I hope this is the year that I learn to count." They're both truly idiotic expressions, but, when I consider the former, I sometimes wonder if there's some truth to it.
