An Open Letter To My Next College Roommate
Divine Brooks

I Dear Roommate,

We progressively became really great friends over my first year of college and your second year. We met first semester and we would walk past each other and casually speak. As second semester came, we became even better friends. We started actually hanging out and texting each other. It was you, I, and another one of our best friends against the world! We enjoyed every minute of it, not realizing how fast the time was going by until the end of the year. We pulled study nights staying up talking and studying until wee hours of the morning. Then we'd leave to get food because it was 2 A.M. and you were getting hungry. We had to make the hardest choice of our lives in that moment: Cookout or McDonalds? Maybe even Wawa because you love their Macaroni.

We realized that we wear the same bra size, same clothes size and almost the same shoe size, almost. We already started sharing clothes. I joined the sorority that you are a part of. You didn’t take a little, but you are my fig and I am your flittle. You are there for me when I need you and vice versa.

The end of the year came so fast; time flies when you are having fun they say, and it is immensely true. It was time to pick where we would be living in our next year of college, all three of us knew we were going to be together, just not exactly sure where at.

You and I ended up being roommates for the next school year. I am so excited and I cannot wait until move-in day next year. Our rooms already match now and when they are together, just think of how beautiful our room is going to be.

Our room is going to be so cute; it is going to be teal, beach themed, and our letters are going to be everywhere. It may be a mess at times, but who cares? It’s a college dorm room. When we have our kitchen, we'll be so busy laughing that we'll have to make sure we don't burn anything.

Before we move in together, let me warn you about a few things: I make weird noises when I stretch, I like to sleep a lot, I stress myself out to the point that I only get 3 hours of sleep sometimes, and some days, I can get really moody and just want to be to myself, but you already know that. Do not think that you did anything wrong because it is just me being moody.

Knowing that I am going to have a best friend who will take 2 A.M. drives with me, who will go on Starbucks runs with me, who will be my support system when nobody else seems to be there and who will be my right hand lady is the best feeling in the world. I know you will be there through thick and thin and we'll have to make sure our embarrassing secrets remain hidden.

We will have our late night talks about Justin Bieber, hot guys, and tattoos. I know we will share lots of laughs, stories and stressful nights together, but we are going to make it through all of it with the help of each other. I love you so much and it will never change.

Love,

Your next crazy college roommate

7 Ways to Make Your Language More Transgender and Nonbinary Inclusive

With more people becoming aware of transgender and non-binary people, there have been a lot of questions circulating online and elsewhere about how to be more inclusive. Language is very important in making a space safer for trans and non-binary individuals. With language, there is an established and built-in measure of whether a place could be safe or unsafe. If the wrong language is used, the place is unsafe and shows a lack of education on trans and non-binary issues. With the right language and education, there can be more safe spaces for trans and non-binary people to exist without feeling the need to hide their identities or feel threatened for merely existing.

singing
Cambio

Singing is something I do all day, every day. It doesn't matter where I am or who's around. If I feel like singing, I'm going to. It's probably annoying sometimes, but I don't care -- I love to sing! If I'm not singing, I'm probably humming, sometimes without even realizing it. So as someone who loves to sing, these are some of the feelings and thoughts I have probably almost every day.
