An Open Letter To My Little Brother

Dear lil bro,

There is a lot I have to tell you and I thought the best way for me to fully express the emotions I have would be with words:

I love you, bub. You are the best brother a girl could ever ask for. There are so many reasons why, like how you always have my back, how you can make me laugh and how you can cheer me up after some idiot has broken my heart again.

To start off, I want to thank you for having my back. For standing up for me when no one else would. For being overprotective and guarding me from the bullies. I can't thank you enough for the times you consoled me when I was sobbing after people had posted horrible stuff about me all over social media; how you would surprise me with Reese’s cups just out of the blue because you knew it would make me happy. Or the time we were at Target, and I was having a bad day, and you said you bought some espresso from Starbucks when I asked what you were doing, but you had actually bought me my favorite drink. You are so thoughtful and kind, and I am lucky that I get to watch you continuously grow into the young man you are becoming.

I love how there were so many things that only you and I would have fun doing. Like playing Wizards 101 for 6 hours and arguing over who had the best character (sorry for sharing this with the world, it is just a great representation of why I love you). And how you pretended to be a student while I was practicing my teaching skills when we younger; lord knows how fun it was to have me teach you math incorrectly. I am just really appreciative of all the memories we share, no matter how strange they may seem to other people. I am just happy I got to share them with you.

I even love how overprotective you are. I know that you always have my best interest at heart and that you have always been looking out for me when I couldn’t seem to realize that I was talking to another loser. You would stand up for me when anyone ever disrespected me and that is something I will always cherish.

There are obviously some times that have been not so great. Honestly, you really gross me out nine times out of 10. But on a positive note, growing up with your gross habits helped prepare me for what future boyfriends would do. If I could grow up with you then I could make it through any unpleasant moment with any other guy.

But the flaws that you have are far surpassed by your amazing qualities. You are so caring and genuine to everyone you meet; it is truly inspiring to watch how kind you are. You know how to respect women and I am proud that I can say that about you in this generation. I can’t wait until I get to be the over protective sister when you start dating because I don’t want watch you ever get hurt. I love you more than words describe and I am so blessed that I got you as a brother. I am so grateful for you and I just hope you know that.

Love,

Your favorite sister

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
