An Open Letter to My Lifelong Best Friend

Because you’ve always been there for me, even when we weren’t close.

An Open Letter to My Lifelong Best Friend
Julie Halmo

We started off as toddlers with matching 90’s jumpers and the same haircut. Our moms were best friends, and soon enough we were inseparable. We did everything together, from joining Girl Scouts to eating Blue’s Clues mac and cheese every day.

We shared laughs and tears, and played on the playground until the sun went down. No matter what we did, we were always together. However, as we got older, interests and friend groups changed. We drifted apart for the majority of our awkward ‘tween’ years. It wasn’t until high school that we rekindled our lifelong friendship.

From the day that we became best friends again, I knew it was for forever. Those years felt as if they had never happened, and we connected right back to where we left off. I am so thankful for the lifelong friendship you have given me and I don’t think I tell you that enough, so this letter is for you.

I want to thank you for:

Believing in my dreams,

Supporting me through my achievements and my downfalls,

Going along with my crazy ideas and making hilarious memories from those adventures,

Always sticking up for me, even when I wasn’t around,

Thinking things through when I'm impulsive,

Endless laughs,

Sending me little things to let me know you're thinking of me,

Never putting me down,

Listening to my rants for hours,

Helping me through classes,

Teaching me new things everyday,

Never having awkward silences,

Giving me advice and accepting mine,

Coming over just to talk and sit on the couch for hours,

Bringing a new perspective of life,

Allowing me to be my unfiltered self,

Never forgetting my birthday,

Boy talks and breakup support,

Cheering me up,

Being my prom date,

Baking me cupcakes and cookie-brownies for my birthdays,

Always making me feel cherished,

Taking care of me during surgery recovery, even though you were going through recovery yourself,

And probably the most important, thank you for sticking with me, even though we are hundreds of miles away.

There are millions of reasons that I could thank you for, including care packages and always reminding me how much you cherish my friendship. I know that with college and distance, friendships can be ruined, but as we go into our sophomore year of college, I know that you will always be my best friend.

I am so proud of all you accomplished, and how intelligent and determined of a woman you are. You are following your passion and I know you will be successful. I am so proud to call you my best friend and tell people of your achievements. You are the most kind-hearted person to enter my life and I don't thank you enough for all these years of friendship. You are a once-in-a-lifetime-person and there is no one I would rather be best friends with for the rest of my life than you.

Thank you for being you.

Love,

Your forever best friend.

I think the hardest thing about going away to college is figuring out how to become an adult. Leaving a household where your parents took care of literally everything (thanks, Mom!) and suddenly becoming your own boss is overwhelming. I feel like I'm doing a pretty good job of being a grown-up, but once in awhile I do something that really makes me feel like I'm #adulting. Twenty-somethings know what I'm talking about.

I went to a small high school, like 120-people-in-my-graduating-class small. It definitely had some good and some bad, and if you also went to a small high school, I’m sure you’ll relate to the things that I went through.

1. If something happens, everyone knows about it

Who hooked up with whom at the party? Yeah, heard about that an hour after it happened. You failed a test? Sorry, saw on Twitter last period. Facebook fight or, God forbid, real fight? It was on half the class’ Snapchat story half an hour ago. No matter what you do, someone will know about it.

Chandler Bing

I'm assuming that we've all heard of the hit 90's TV series, Friends, right? Who hasn't? Admittedly, I had pretty low expectations when I first started binge watching the show on Netflix, but I quickly became addicted.

Without a doubt, Chandler Bing is the most relatable character, and there isn't an episode where I don't find myself thinking, Yup, Iam definitely the Chandler of my friend group.

Working with the public can be a job, in and of itself. Some people are just plain rude for no reason. But regardless of how your day is going, always having to be in the best of moods, or at least act like it... right?

1. When a customer wants to return a product, hands you the receipt, where is printed "ALL SALES ARE FINAL" in all caps.

2. Just because you might be having a bad day, and you're in a crappy mood, doesn't make it okay for you to yell at me or be rude to me. I'm a person with feelings, just like you.

3. People refusing to be put on hold when a customer is standing right in front of you. Oh, how I wish I could just hang up on you!

RBF, or resting b*tch face, is a serious condition that many people suffer from worldwide. Suffers are often bombarded with daily questions such as "Are you OK?" and "Why are you so mad?" If you have RBF, you've probably had numerous people tell you to "just smile!"
