An Open Letter To My High School Teacher

An Open Letter To My High School Teacher
Jaya Gautam

We never really got the opportunity to thank our favorite high school teacher or teachers. With the second semester slowly approaching, I look back on high school and the three teachers that made an impact on my life.

Mr. Kellogg - my homeroom teacher for four years.

You've taught us many memorable parts of life. I remember freshman year homeroom how all of us listened to every thing you said because we were just little, scared freshman. You made points in homeroom that pushed us to be better students and not slack off. We trusted you, and went to you with numerous of questions, but you never gave us the "sugar-coated" answers. You were honest with us, and that made me respect you so much more as a teacher. By senior year, I'm pretty sure I went to you with multiple dilemmas. From complaining about that teacher who probably annoyed me that day for who knows what reason, to letting me get homework done and help the class you were teaching because you knew I didn't want to go to that boring study hall. But most importantly, I want to thank you for believing in all of us. For pushing us the extra step to ask our teachers about extra help, which I needed, telling us not to be scared of failing that test because you knew we studied for it. Thank you for guiding us through high school, because without you as our homeroom teacher and mentor we probably wouldn't be where we are right now.

Secondly, I like to thank Mrs. Conklin, my junior year Spanish teacher.

You believed in all your students, even when we thought that you were such a strict teacher. You made us earn our grades and proved to us that even when we didn't think we knew something, if we actually study we'll understand it without a problem. You helped me a lot my senior year with deciding where I wanted to go to college. Almost, every last period I would come and find you and talk to you, and sometimes Mrs.Caporale would be there and I would talk to both of you about what I wanted to major in. You both supported me and when I was stuck between two schools you asked me just a simple questions and it made me think about it, and then I was able to decide where I wanted to attend. Everything you said to me and others was extremely helpful, and it's as if you were my "school mom." I trusted you with a lot and I still do to this day! (By the way congrats on having a new addition to your family soon!)

Lastly, Mr. Tucker, I cannot thank you enough for literally everything.

You let me vent to you about absolutely anything. I was able to come in your class room and ask you about anything; you always had an answer. When I applied to college, you were the teacher I went to for recommendations because you were also a great mentor like Mr. Kellogg. Thank you for letting me sit in your classroom during lunch time and help me with Prob & Stat. For letting me talk to you about that test I just bombed, but you told me to do better on the next one. For knowing I was a little bit "bratty" when it came to certain things but no matter what, you helped me through high school. Even the times I would just come into your class room to throw something out, or letting me use some of your supplies because I had homework due next period and I needed to color that diagram. For being positive through practically everything and telling me that everything happens for a reason. I miss you and hiding out in your class when I didn't want to go to lunch or study hall. (I can't do that now).

Thank you, Mr. Kellogg, Mrs. Conklin, and Mr. Tucker for being the best teachers I had in high school. For always taking that extra time to help and believing in all your students. You three are the teachers that students miss the most. You all made impacts on our lives and we are now starting our second semester of college and we still think back to what you said to us—all the motivational statements that help us through our toughest classes.

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.
