An Open Letter To My Hairstylist, Thank You For Everything You Do

You are so much more than someone who just does my hair.

While some people think a hairdresser's job only entails cutting and styling hair, they miss out on everything you have to offer. You are more than your work. You are more than the things people say about you. You are more than you see yourself. You are so much more than you will ever know. Your work not only gives me a sense of style, but also a boatload of confidence, a feeling of reinvention, a love for myself. And not just because my hair looks great, but because of the person you have dug deep to find within myself.

You have walked with me through so many hard things in my life. We have cried together, laughed together, and most importantly, grown together. You're not just an Aveda artist, you are an inspiration to my life. You have taught me that I can walk through the most difficult things in life with grace and humility. You have shown me that while people may throw their baggage on you and walk over you, that it's never too late to rise up and stand up for yourself.

Even the hardest of things I don't want to share, you see through the window of my soul and give me a sense of understanding. While you have so much on your plate, your month booked out and spending time with your family, you somehow manage to always be there for the people who need you most. You never complain and you find the goodness in people who are so hard to love at times. You have modeled to me what it means to be a holistic professional. So, to my hairstylist, my confidant, my therapist, my spiritual guide, and my friend, thank you for all the roles you play and the way you take them on with grace and humility.

7 Ways to Make Your Language More Transgender and Nonbinary Inclusive

With more people becoming aware of transgender and non-binary people, there have been a lot of questions circulating online and elsewhere about how to be more inclusive. Language is very important in making a space safer for trans and non-binary individuals. With language, there is an established and built-in measure of whether a place could be safe or unsafe. If the wrong language is used, the place is unsafe and shows a lack of education on trans and non-binary issues. With the right language and education, there can be more safe spaces for trans and non-binary people to exist without feeling the need to hide their identities or feel threatened for merely existing.

Cambio

Singing is something I do all day, every day. It doesn't matter where I am or who's around. If I feel like singing, I'm going to. It's probably annoying sometimes, but I don't care -- I love to sing! If I'm not singing, I'm probably humming, sometimes without even realizing it. So as someone who loves to sing, these are some of the feelings and thoughts I have probably almost every day.
