An Open Letter To My Godchild

To my sweet girl, Remi Marie. I hope you know how grateful I am to care for you as a godmother - to hold your hand, to watch you grow and to walk with you through our faith. And I hope one day you can understand how much I cherish the responsibilities that being a godmother brings to my life. I love you.

Today, you are merely a child--filled with innocence, trust, faith, love and laughter. When you're my age, those things don't come as easy as they do when you are a two-year-old.

First, let me start by telling you the most important thing: you are as beautiful as the stars in sky, the mountains in the east, the valleys in the west, and this earth that God so graciously put you on. Unfortunately someday, and I dread the day it comes, someone will tell you or make you feel otherwise. For those times, take heart my love, your beauty is everlasting and a one-of-one design in the eyes of your Maker. And me.

In all the things you learn from me, I hope you learn that the world really is a beautiful place. There are people to be met and understood, places to be seen and glorified and so much more incredible things to experience in this life. That being said, do not let the wrongdoings of the world discourage you from loving it so. If anything, it needs your love more than you need its. It needs the love of a girl who knows nothing more than just how to love, when to love, and who to love. Remember this quote when you've done all you could do, and it still isn't enough to the world: "When you have a bad day, a really bad day, treat the world better than it treated you."

Speaking of this crazy world, don't be like the rest of them, darling. Before you're my age, I'm sure no one your own age will know who Willie, Johnny, or Waylon are anymore, but you will (oh, trust me, you will). So listen to them. Someday, your very best friends won't understand why you chose to follow your heart instead of theirs. Follow it, and don't look back. Someday you'll be judged for the people you choose to care for and love, love them anyways, and love those who judge you as well.

You will always have someone, and please never let your heart forget it. Whether it be your mom, your dad, Gigi, pops, your godfather or me, someone will always be there to love you, to hold you, to wipe your tears, to laugh with you, and to show you why you were created for something greater.

You are altogether beautiful, my love; there is no flaw in you. (Song of Solomon 4:7)

Love always,

Your "fairy" godmother.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
