An Open Letter To My Future Residents

This is a first for me, too.

An Open Letter To My Future Residents

Dear future residents,

First of all, let me introduce myself. I’ll be your Resident Assistant for the upcoming 2016-2017 school year. This is my first year doing this, and if you are a freshman we are on this new journey together. I have a few things I want to let you guys know before you move in this August.

I’m figuring all this out as I go along. Of course, I go through a decent amount of training before you come but anything else that is thrown my way is new. I am super excited about this new job. I’ve been figuring out hall events and door tags and themes ever since I got the notification about my position.

I want you guys to know that it’s ok to be unsure about any move you make in college. Whether to change your major, take that random class you thought was interesting or join the sign language club out of curiosity. College is all about trying new things and finding yourself, and the best thing is you are surrounded by hundreds (or even thousands) of people doing the same exact thing. Whether you are an incoming freshman or a departing senior, there is a lot to be learned every step of the way.

With that being said, my door is always open. I’ve seen and been through a lot in life, and a whole bunch more in my first two years of college. I’m always a text, knock, or even a note slid under my door away. My job is to make sure you have the most enjoyable, safe, and memorable residence life experience while you are in my hall for this year. I have a few ideas up my sleeve, but I won’t reveal too much so you are surprised when you come in August.

College is going to be filled with new adventures and experiences, as well as a few bumps along the road. You’ll be kicked down to your lowest a few times, probably want to go home at least three times a semester, and you'll miss the home cooked meals you took for granted all your life. It’s OK! I promise! Getting through the homesickness and the adjustment period (also known as first semester) is hard, but worth it! Stick it out!

Remember, your RA is there to make sure your hall is safe and enjoyable but he or she is someone who has been through the whole college thing before, and they probably have some awesome advice to give to you. Don’t get me wrong, adults are awesome at giving you words of inspiration, but sometimes hearing it from a peer who has been through it recently resonates better. Don’t be afraid to reach out! That’s what we are here for.

I have so many awesome events planned for the year, and I’m so excited to be a part of your residence life experience in college! I can’t wait to meet you guys in the fall. Enjoy your summer!

Until we meet again,

Your future RA

Christmas Tree

Now that Halloween is over, it's time to focus on the Holiday Season. Don't get me wrong, I think Thanksgiving is great and can't wait for it, but nothing gives me greater joy than watching Freeform's 25 Days of Christmas, lighting peppermint scented candles, decking the halls, and baking gingerbread cookies. So while we approach the greatest time of the year, let's watch the 15 best Christmas movies of all time.

6 Signs You Are An English Major

There are various stereotypes about college students, most of which revolve around the concept of your major. Unfortunately, we often let stereotypes precede our own judgments, and we take what information is immediately available to us rather than forming our own opinions after considerable reflection. If I got a dollar for every time my friends have made a joke about my major I could pay my tuition. One stereotype on campus is the sensitive, overly critical and rigid English major. Here are six telltale signs you are one of them.

27 Things 'The Office' Has Taught Us

"The Office" is a mockumentary based on everyday office life featuring love triangles, silly pranks and everything in between. It can get pretty crazy for just an average day at the office.

When you were little, your parents probably told you television makes your brain rot so you wouldn't watch it for twelve straight hours. However, I feel we can learn some pretty valuable stuff from television shows. "The Office," while a comedy, has some pretty teachable moments thrown in there. You may not know how to react in a situation where a co-worker does something crazy (like put your office supplies in jello) but thanks to "The Office," now you'll have an idea how to behave ifsomething like that should happen.

Here are just a few of the things that religious Office watchers can expect to learn.

Being pre-med is quite a journey. It’s not easy juggling school work, extracurricular activities, volunteering, shadowing, research, and MCAT prep all at the same time. Ever heard of “pain is temporary, but GPA is forever?” Pre-meds don’t just embody that motto; we live and breathe it. Here are 10 symptoms you’re down with the pre-med student syndrome.

High School And College Sucked All Of The Fun Out Of Reading

Books were always about understanding for me, about learning the way someone else sees, about connection.

High School And College Sucked All Of The Fun Out Of Reading

I keep making this joke whenever the idea of books is brought up: "God, I wish I knew how to read." It runs parallel to another stupid phrase, as I watch my friends struggle through their calculus classes late at night in our floor lounge: "I hope this is the year that I learn to count." They're both truly idiotic expressions, but, when I consider the former, I sometimes wonder if there's some truth to it.
