To Those Who Have Made A Difference In My Life

A letter to my friends.

To Those Who Have Made A Difference In My Life
Ali Depner

I think that friends are forever, it doesn’t matter if it is for only 2 months, 2 weeks, or 2 years, the experience, the laughs, and the tears are always going to be there for you to remember and cherish for the rest of your life. When I left Venezuela, I left my whole world behind--all that I knew and everything I cared about the most was in that country--and even the country itself. Getting to a new country has been a challenge for me, not only because I had to start all over again not knowing what the outcome was going to be, but also because I had to start my life again in a country that it was completely new for me. However, I know that I have been lucky, I have a better education than the one that I would have had in Venezuela, a life that I can truly enjoy, even though my friends and my family were still in my beautiful Venezuela.

This semester, I came across a group of people that have really touched my heart. After three years outside Venezuela I had two weeks where I could experience being back home again, and now that they are gone I feel overwhelmed with feelings of gratitude and love for my Argentinian friends. How can I start to say thank you, for making me feel welcomed and loved and part of the whole group like I was one of you, for completely changing my semester and for making me feel like I could belong to another country that wasn’t mine? I want you guys to know that all of you transformed our lives and made it better and I know it was not only me, we are a big group of people that you guys touched and rocked their worlds as much as you guys rocked mine. The time I spent with you made me value the friends that I have in my life more. I know that I have to care more for them, and love them every day like it is the last week I am going to be able to spend time with them. Seeing you guys leave was a very hard moment for me because I felt like something I cared a lot about was leaving my life again, but I have to be happy because I have hope and faith it will not be the last time I will see your faces. Now that I have had the pleasure of knowing most of you (and I’m sorry I could not spend more time with all of you) I want to say thank you for making this the best I had in UCA and for giving us happiness in days when we needed it, I wish you all the best and I hope we meet again.

I couldn’t finish this without saying something to the one who deals with me every day, to Jose, who has been my biggest support, my best friend, and who has been there for me even on the days when it’s too hard to be around me. Thank you, for being there for me, for supporting me when I fail and celebrating with me when I triumph, for all the laughs and awesome memories that I know will continue for a long time, I think you know how much I appreciate you and how much you have changed my life, I treasure every day that I can call you my friend and every memory I have with you, sometimes I think I don’t deserve you as a friend but I’m so happy that you’re in my life.

It's officially December. There is less than a month of 2024, and I still feel like yesterday was summer. Now comes the merriest time of the year, the Christmas season.

Everyone has been waiting for this time of year since mid-October (which is way too early, in my opinion) or before. It's a time of love, family, memory-making, and gift-giving. A lot of times when I ask friends and family what they want, I get a lot of "I don't know" or "I don't care."

I was sitting at my cubicle, now that I am an adult, looking at the rain pouring down on the windowsill, bumming on life, wishing for the rain to just stop for a full day.

There are moments where we count down the hours until work is over and how many more days till the weekend, and this many weeks until something exciting. Or something like that? Well, I was bumming because my next day off from work is not until Memorial Day weekend, which is not until the end of May. And since this is my first year out of college being a “real person,” I am totally missing the winter, spring and summer breaks. I am sure all of us have felt this way even if just for a hot minute…

If you go to or went to Kent State, then more than likely you have done or will do some of these things.

1. You’ve slipped and fallen on the ice at least once.
