An Open Letter To My Friends From Back Home

The one group of people that keeps me sane.

Going into high school was a challenge for me. I did not have any friends in middle school, and the transition was hard. However, all of you made it so much easier. I could not ask for a better group of people to spend my time with, and I cannot even count all of the fantastic memories on my two hands. Making the decision to join drama club was one of the best decisions I made in high school.

Thank you for reminding me how important I am. I would mostly get ensemble roles and this would really get to me because I really wanted the lead. You got me through it and told me that the ensemble was just as important as the main roles and that there was no show without an ensemble. It got me through and I am beyond grateful we were able to put on so many great shows together. And when I got the role of Chutney Windham in Legally Blonde, your response was overwhelming. The amount of love you all gave to my character was astounding.

Thank you for our chambers rehearsals. I cannot believe how great our voices sounded together and how well we worked as a team. Not to mention how fun we made it. I remember screaming old show and chorus songs on the bus when we were going to the elderly home to sing for them, the massage circles we used to have before we started singing, and our end-of-the-semester parties where we would do a Secret Santa and stuff our faces with the endless food we brought.

Thank you for making our chorus so spectacular. We knew how to make everybody feel excited and energetic. We basically led the chorus and were a vital part. From "Nightingale" to "Blow the Candles Out", there were so many songs we knew every word to. I also can't forget about going to Chrissy's Cravings after our shows. And after bombing my AP Bio exam when we all ate our feelings.

Thank you for our endless traditions. I lived for Fridays at TGI Fridays after our shows, and the wonderful cast parties after the last ones. I loved family time when we would all get together before our shows started and do warms ups to calm us down. I remember when we would all meditate from time to time, lie on the ground and pretend we were our characters. But let's talk about something other than drama club or chorus for a second.

Thank you for being the best support system I could possibly ask for. You were all there for me for all of my problems and struggles. From me having a rough first semester, to comforting me on my mother's birthday, you guys make me feel a hundred times better. I also can't forget our other traditions, like going to Stewart's after basketball games, having lunch in the chorus room, having bonfires and singing while someone was playing the ukulele, hanging out and watching old plays and dying laughing. Oh, lets not forget getting super hyped because of the slew of 70's and 80's songs that played at prom. We can't forget about our senior trip to Disney either. We rode on all of the rides together and cried laughing at the photos taken after the rides. We also cried when we had to wait for our ride after Grad Bash at Universal Studios because we were tired and hungry and didn't get back to the hotel until four in the morning. There was also graduation when we sang "For Good" from Wicked and held back tears. I remember our last hangout before we all went to college and we all bawled our eyes out at the thought of being separated from one another.

Finally, thank you for not letting me forget about FOOTball. Thank you for lifting me up when I was "Donion Rings" with life. Thank you for teaching me that you can, in fact, hum with your mouth open. Thank you for making me feel so glad that I "smet" all of you. Thank you for not being velociraptors and leaning on the back bar on the top riser in chorus. And most importantly, Thnks Fr Th Memeories.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
