An Open Letter To My Female Friends

Screw anyone who says guys and girls can't just be friends.

Everyone says that guys and girls can’t be friends with each other without their being a romantic interest one way or the other. I think that’s ludicrous and also inherently sexist. I have always had a lot a female friends and have always stayed that way. So, this is a letter to all my female friends who are just that, friends, and always will be.

Thank you for your amazing taste in music. I would never have found half the music I like if it weren’t for your suggestions. I never would have listened to show tunes. I still don’t like country, but that’s okay.

Thanks for all the adventures. You can seriously turn walking across campus or taking a trip to Walmart into an amazing adventure. We’ve had so many crazy adventures and hilarious stories together, I couldn’t imagine college life without them.

Thanks for never judging me for how I dress. I appreciate you always making sure I’m dressed well, and letting me know if I’m not without judging me for it.

Thank you for all the support you give me. Thank you for understanding me and listening to me in a way that my guy friends never could. An emotional conversation with a female friend is much different than an emotional conversation with a male friend. I always know that you’ll be there for me when times get tough. There are just some things that it’s difficult to explain to my male friends, and I appreciate that you listen to me and give me advice for how to deal with it. Also, you should know that I’ll always be there for you when the situation is reversed.

Thanks for being the best wing-women. No one understands girls better than girls, especially when it comes to dating. Thanks for all the great ideas when it comes to dating. I am so glad that you know when I need the push to make the move and giving me that push. I wouldn’t be in the great relationship that I am in if it weren’t for you guys, and the not-so-subtle nudges that you gave me to progress the relationship along. I’ll always be sure to return the favor, and be the best wingman I can be.

Thanks for making me a better brother. You’re all like sisters to me and that makes me a better brother to the sisters I actually have. You let me get in touch with my feminine side and show me the things girls are interested in so I can ask my sisters about them.

Thanks for just being super cool humans. Yes, you give me shit a lot of the time, and you have a tendency for sarcasm, but I appreciate you and your generosity. You remind me to be strong, because even on your worst days you care for the people around you.

You, my female friends, are some of the best friends I’ve ever had. You let me in on the gossip, most of the time. You help me get in touch with my feminine side. You give me someone to send pictures of dogs to. You like a lot more of my tweets than my male friends. You’re all great and amazing people and I'm glad that we're friends.

7 Ways to Make Your Language More Transgender and Nonbinary Inclusive

With more people becoming aware of transgender and non-binary people, there have been a lot of questions circulating online and elsewhere about how to be more inclusive. Language is very important in making a space safer for trans and non-binary individuals. With language, there is an established and built-in measure of whether a place could be safe or unsafe. If the wrong language is used, the place is unsafe and shows a lack of education on trans and non-binary issues. With the right language and education, there can be more safe spaces for trans and non-binary people to exist without feeling the need to hide their identities or feel threatened for merely existing.

Blair Waldorf
Stop Hollywood

For those of you who have watched "Gossip Girl" before (and maybe more than just once), you know how important of a character Blair Waldorf is. Without Blair, the show doesn’t have any substance, scheme, or drama. Although the beginning of the show started off with Blair’s best friend Serena returning from boarding school, there just simply is no plot without Blair. With that being said, Blair’s presence in the show in much more complex than that. Her independent and go-getter ways have set an example for "Gossip Girl" fans since the show started and has not ended even years after the show ended. Blair never needed another person to define who she was and she certainly didn’t need a man to do that for her. When she envisioned a goal, she sought after it, and took it. This is why Blair’s demeanor encompasses strong women like her.

Singing is something I do all day, every day. It doesn't matter where I am or who's around. If I feel like singing, I'm going to. It's probably annoying sometimes, but I don't care -- I love to sing! If I'm not singing, I'm probably humming, sometimes without even realizing it. So as someone who loves to sing, these are some of the feelings and thoughts I have probably almost every day.
